Theo Von Asked Zohran Mamdani to Define Socialism for Him

Not every political conversation needs a debate stage. Sometimes it just takes a comedian admitting he doesn’t actually know what a word means — and asking someone to explain it plainly.
That’s what happened on the October 1 episode of This Past Weekend, when Theo Von asked New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani to define socialism. The question wasn’t a gotcha; it was genuine curiosity, the kind that cuts through years of political shorthand. And Mamdani answered it in kind.
“Socialism, to me, means that you will have whatever you need to live a dignified life, and that it is the government’s job to deliver on that,” Mamdani said.
From there, he got specific. He named housing, childcare and public transit as non-negotiables — the baseline things a person needs to function in a city as expensive as New York. “No one should be priced out of these things,” he said.
For Mamdani, the concept doesn’t stop at the voting booth. He described socialism as democracy extended past the ballot box and into the places people actually spend their lives: their workplaces and their homes.
