Modena Automobili Unveils Project MA-01: A Reimagined Maserati Biturbo-Shamal
Limited to 33 examples and expected to start at $600,000 USD.
by Arthur Parkhouse · HypebeastModena Automobili is embarking on an ambitious restomod build, known as Project MA-01, which transforms the iconic 1990s Maserati Biturbo-Shamal into a modern, muscular supercar. Backed by over 1,000 hours of brainstorming and expert consultations, the Modena team aims to resurrect the Biturbo-Shamal with a contemporary edge while preserving its distinctive Italian spirit.
Project MA-01 combines the expertise of Modena Automobili’s in-house specialists and external engineering firms. The project involves significant upgrades, including a 500hp 3L V6 twin-turbo engine from the Maserati Ghibli S, co-engineered by Ferrari and Maserati. This powerful engine enables the car to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 4.7 seconds, achieving a top speed of 177 mph. The Ghibli S’s ZF eight-speed sequential automatic transmission, specially calibrated to shift gears in 150 milliseconds, is designed to provide smooth, rapid acceleration while optimizing fuel consumption and emissions.
For enhanced stability and safety, the original Maserati Biturbo chassis has undergone extensive scanning, strengthening and coating. This transformation maintains the Shamal’s signature character while accommodating the advanced Ghibli S powertrain. While still a work in progress, once complete, Modena is expected to only produce 33 examples, each starting at $600,000 USD.
