A rare 1987 Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth is set to hit the auction block, offering enthusiasts a unique chance to own a piece of motorsport history. Available through Bonhams Cars, this homologation special is one of only 500 ever produced, making it exceedingly rare — especially in the U.S.

Designed for the track, the Sierra RS500 Cosworth was a standout in both touring car and rally racing, powered by the iconic 2.0L Cosworth YB turbocharged engine producing 224 hp. This particular example, finished in black, boasts only 48,300 miles and remains in near-original condition, a rarity for cars of this era. The vehicle, offered from the renowned Squadra Lupo collection, has been meticulously preserved, with careful attention paid to maintaining its performance and authenticity.

The RS500 was crafted as a Group A homologation special, engineered for high performance. Modifications by Tickford included enhanced aerodynamics and a more powerful engine, allowing it to compete at the highest levels of motorsport. This model’s pristine condition, coupled with its unmodified factory specifications, sets it apart from heavily tuned examples.

With only two previous owners, the car has been well-maintained, recently receiving detailed preservation work, fresh tires and thorough service. The auction includes a custom-fitted car cover in Texaco livery and a detailed documentation folder, offering collectors further insight into its careful preservation.
