Alphabet subsidiary Waymo has announced plans to launch its driverless taxi service in Toronto by 2028

Groundwork begins in the coming days with road mapping and software validation under Ontario's autonomous vehicle pilot program

Local partner Element Fleet Management will oversee all on-the-ground fleet maintenance charging and logistical operations

Waymo has officially announced plans to launch its driverless robotaxi service in Toronto, marking the autonomous mobility company’s first commercial expansion into Canada. The Alphabet subsidiary targets 2028 to transport its first public riders as technical groundwork begins across the city.

Initial deployment kicks off in the coming days with high-definition street mapping and software training led by human specialists behind the wheel under Ontario’s provincial autonomous pilot framework. Day-to-day operations—spanning vehicle maintenance, depot charging, and rider readiness—will be managed by Toronto-based partner Element Fleet Management, which currently oversees Waymo’s infrastructure in San Diego. “As a Canadian company, we are proud to be expanding our partnership with Waymo,” stated Laura Dottori-Attanasio, chief executive of Element Fleet Management. Longtime backers CPP Investments and automotive parts manufacturer Magna also continue to support the company’s capital and vehicle assembly efforts.

Waymo reports that its autonomous fleet has driven more than 400 million kilometers to date, yielding 95% fewer serious-injury collisions than human drivers. While the initiative has earned support from accessibility advocates such as CNIB for offering independent transportation, critics note that navigating heavy traffic and severe winter conditions will pose a rigorous test for the system. The Canadian rollout builds on Waymo’s broader international roadmap alongside London and Tokyo.

Waymo is scheduled to launch its driverless taxi service to riders in Toronto in 2028.
