J. Press and Barbour have revived the Burghley, a full-length equestrian wax jacket pulled from Barbour’s archive. First developed in the 1980s for horseback riding and country use, the coat returns with its original riding features intact, now offered through the American Ivy label as long trench-style outerwear gains traction in North America.

The shell is made from 6 oz thornproof waxed cotton, a dense, weatherproof fabric suited to the brambles and rain the coat was built for. The fit is slimmer than the boxy wax jackets many people associate with Barbour, and the hem stops just above the knee. That length provides trench-like coverage without getting in the way in the saddle or on foot.

Several details point back to the jacket’s riding roots. A drip strip, originally designed to keep a horse’s sweat off the rider’s clothing, runs along the interior, while a roomy rear vent allows for movement when mounted. A two-way Barbour ring-pull zip lets the wearer open the coat from the bottom, a practical feature for riding that also works when sitting down in the city.

The finishing touches are classic Barbour. A corduroy collar frames the neckline and pairs with a storm flap that can be closed against wind and rain, and the inside is lined in 100% cotton in the brand’s signature tartan.
