Le Labo turns the act of remembering into scent with PAPYRUS 20, the newest addition to its Classic Candle collection. Inspired by ancient civilizations pressing papyrus reeds into sheets capable of carrying stories across centuries, the fragrance explores a more elusive kind of preservation: memories that return through scent without warning.
At its core is cypriol, a material historically associated with papyrus, bringing an earthy, dry and slightly root-like depth that feels almost like aged paper, soil and weathered wood. Against it, ylang-ylang introduces a fleeting floral softness, while warm labdanum lends an ambered, resinous glow and a musk accord settles into the background.
The composition moves between something archival and something intangible — the imagined smell of an old manuscript warmed by sunlight, its pages carrying traces of earth and resin before the fragrance slowly dissolves back into the room. Le Labo describes PAPYRUS 20 as an ode to both what endures and what cannot be held, treating fragrance itself as an “archivist of the ephemeral.”
Its presentation remains deliberately stripped back, allowing that tension between permanence and impermanence to continue visually. Priced at $92 USD, the 245-gram candle is hand-crafted in the U.S. using a high concentration of fragrance oils, a custom wax blend and natural-fiber wicks, housed in Le Labo’s familiar clear glass vessel with an apothecary-style personalized label. The accompanying kraft box repeats the same utilitarian typography and workshop-minded simplicity, giving the object the feeling of something catalogued, dated and stored away — almost like an archival specimen waiting to be rediscovered.
