Summary

BMW’s i3 50 xDrive brings the 3 Series into the Neue Klasse era as its first fully electric iteration.

The EV pairs 463 hp with up to 468 miles of estimated range.

U.S. pricing starts at $61,500 USD.

The eighth-generation BMW 3 Series officially enters the electric era with the debut of the 2027 BMW i3 50 xDrive, marking the brand’s iconic sports sedan transition into the Neue Klasse platform. Grounded in a “technology-open” strategy alongside its internal combustion counterparts, the i3 50 xDrive serves as the flagship all-electric entrant built upon sixth-generation BMW eDrive 800V architecture.

Unlike legacy electric conversions, the i3 utilizes a pack-to-open-body structural battery housing with cylindrical lithium-ion cells integrated directly into the chassis, significantly increasing torsional rigidity while reducing vehicle weight and overall height. Production of the model began in August 2026 at BMW’s modernized parent plant in Munich, Germany, with United States customer deliveries scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2027 at a base MSRP of $61,500 USD (plus $1,350 USD destination and handling).

As for appearance, the i3 50 xDrive introduces the clean, reduced geometry of BMW’s Neue Klasse design language, balancing modern minimalism with classic 2.5-box sports sedan proportions. The front end is defined by a forward-leaning “sharknose” profile and a single visual panel that integrates the iconic BMW kidney grille, twin horizontal LED headlights, and driver-assistance sensors. Smooth exterior surfaces are preserved via auto-extending flush door handles and concealed side-window seals.

Compared to its gasoline-powered G50 3 Series sibling, the electric i3 sits on a stretched 114.1-inch wheelbase (versus 112.6 inches) and features a slightly wider 73.4-inch stance to accommodate its floor-mounted battery pack. Inside, the cabin abandons traditional instrument clusters in favor of BMW Panoramic iDrive, which projects essential driving data across the full width of the lower windshield, complemented by a 17.9-inch free-cut central display angled toward the driver and a new multifunction steering wheel utilizing shy-tech controls.

Beneath its sculpted body, the i3 50 xDrive pairs an electrically excited synchronous motor on the primary rear axle (322 hp) with a front asynchronous induction motor (165 hp) to generate a combined output of 463 horsepower and 476 lb-ft of torque. This dual-motor setup propels the sedan from 0 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds, managed by BMW’s centralized “Heart of Joy” superbrain computer, which processes driving dynamics ten times faster than previous control units. The 112.2 kWh battery pack enables an estimated EPA driving range of 446 to 468 miles on a single charge. With 400 kW DC fast-charging capabilities, the 800V system can replenish 10% to 80% capacity in 21 minutes or add up to 208 miles of range in just 10 minutes, while also supporting bidirectional Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) and Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) power capabilities.
