Virgin Australia is dangling a shiny carrot for serious high-flyers with the launch of the lofty Velocity Platinum Plus tier. Promising to go “above and beyond Platinum”, Platinum Plus gives the airline’s most regular jetsetters a fresh mark of recognition, beginning with a distinctive brag-friendly bag tag.
Reaching Platinum Plus is an impressive feat, requiring 2000 status credits per year – of which 75 per cent must come from Virgin Australia’s own flights or VA codeshares. For domestic air warriors, it’s a tough ask. At just one status credit earned per $12 spent, that’s akin to $24,000 in annual airfare expenditure. For those slogging it out on the airline’s cheapest
Economy Lite fares, it’s a heftier $48,000 a year.
