"LRT3 will start its operation by late June 2026" - Anthony Loke

Transport Minister Anthony Loke explained that the official date of operation will be announced within two weeks as the Light Rail Transit Line 3 (LRT3) is fast approaching its launch. The minister also said the project is now in its final testing phase, with trial operations underway and trains ready for service. This is why you should pay attention.

Anthony Loke is confident the train will be operational soon

Additionally, the project was originally targeted to be operational by 30 September 2025 after reaching 99.21% completion. However, challenges in system coordination and final testing caused the original schedule to slip. On 23 February, Anthony Loke expressed confidence that LRT3 would be operational before June. However, on 28 April, he warned that continued delays could increase costs and affect contractors due to unresolved technical issues.

Besides that, LRT3 is the fourth rail transit service in the Klang Valley and will be operated by Rapid KL. The 37km line connects Bandar Utama in Petaling Jaya to Johan Setia in Klang with 25 stations that are expected to benefit more than 2 million residents in the rapidly developing area. With a construction cost of RM21.93 billion, the project is expected to carry up to 39,260 passengers per hour, thereby reducing traffic congestion and improving the efficiency of the public transport system.

Transportation safety is the main priority

In related developments, the ministry also emphasised the aspect of transportation safety. Among the measures being considered is the proposal to establish the Malaysian Transport Safety Board (MTSB). In addition, discussions with e-hailing operators are also underway regarding the installation of dashboard cameras to protect drivers. However, this measure needs to ensure a balance between driver safety and passenger privacy so that the interests of both parties are protected.

Personally, we feel this project is a bit overdue and that Malaysians deserve better. If anything, the LRT3 should have started its operation by now, and delays at this point are simply unacceptable. What are your thoughts on the news? Feel free to leave your comments below.
