KLIA will begin its full enforcement of the Vehicle Access Management System (VAMS) today

Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) today began full enforcement of the Vehicle Access Management System (VAMS). So, what should you know about it?

For your information, this measure was implemented after a three-month trial period recorded a significant reduction in congestion at roadside areas. VAMS uses Vehicle Registration Number Readers (LPR) to accurately record the time each vehicle enters before automatically calculating the duration of stay upon exit.

Payment can be made via Touch 'n Go, credit card or MyDebit

Moreover, vehicles are given a grace period or relaxation of 10 minutes, and after that, a fine ranging from RM10 to a maximum of RM100 is imposed, depending on the period over the limit. Payment can be made via Touch 'n Go, credit card or MyDebit.

For drivers who need to wait longer, several alternatives are available, including Short-Term Parking with 15 minutes of free parking, Long-Term Parking with 30 minutes of free parking and the KLIA Public Waiting Area, which is a designated free waiting zone.

Additionally, Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) Managing Director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani said the trial period had successfully changed driver behaviour, with the number of vehicles stopping for more than 10 minutes in the passenger drop-off and pick-up lanes decreasing from 50% to 21%.

The data from the trial period shows that congestion at roadside areas improves when vehicles adhere to the 10-minute limit. Most users at KLIA are complying with the rule, and with full enforcement at Terminal 1 starting today, we aim to ensure more orderly access.

On top of that, he added that this full enforcement is important to ensure smoother traffic flow, especially ahead of the year-end travel season and preparations for Visit Malaysia Year 2026.
