Tesla overtakes BYD as the World’s Number 1 EV
The race for the title of world's number one electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer has changed again when Tesla managed to reclaim the top position from BYD for the first quarter of 2026. That said, what should you know about it?
Sales have increased by 6.5%
Based on the latest data, Tesla recorded deliveries of 358023 pure electric vehicles (BEV) units globally between January and March. It increased by 6.5% compared to the same period last year. In the same period, BYD, which previously led at the end of 2025, recorded a significant decline in the BEV segment. BYD only shipped 310389 units, a decrease of 25.5% year-on-year and lagging behind Tesla by almost 48000 units.
Moreover, this performance was influenced by policy changes in China, including EV subsidies,s which are now capped at 12% with a maximum ceiling of RMB20,000 and the reintroduction of a 5% sales tax on electric vehicles. Tesla's advantage is largely supported by its global operations, particularly its Shanghai factory, which produced 213,398 units in the first quarter.
Additionally, this figure represents more than half of the total global sales. In addition, Tesla has also introduced aggressive financing packages in China, including loans of up to seven years with low interest rates. Despite losing the throne, BYD is still showing recovery momentum with total sales reaching 300,222 units in March alone.
With local government support and rising fuel prices, the competition between these two EV giants is expected to continue to be fierce throughout 2026
