India launches its first-ever homemade processor

India announced the successful launch of its first microprocessor chip, known as DHRUV64. So, what should you know about it?

A major step forward for India

For your information, it is the first dual-core 64-bit microprocessor made in India with a speed of 1.0 GHz, marking a major step in the country's efforts to achieve the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat or technological self-reliance.

Moreover, the chip is developed by C-DAC (Centre for Development of Advanced Computing ) under the Microprocessor Development Program (MDP), DHRUV64 is designed to support strategic and commercial applications, including 5G, automotive, consumer electronics, industrial automation and IoT.

Additionally, this processor uses a modern RISC-V-based architecture, enabling easy integration with external hardware as well as reducing license costs. India uses nearly 20% of the global microprocessors.
So with the successful launch of DHRUV64, it not only reduces dependence on foreign suppliers but also opens up opportunities for the Indian industry, academia and startups to build local chip-based products.
