Instagram is removing end-to-end encryption for direct messages

Instagram is preparing to remove end-to-end encryption (E2EE) from its direct messaging system, marking a notable shift in how private conversations are handled on the platform. The change will take effect on 8 May 2026, after which encrypted chats will no longer be supported inside Instagram. While it may sound counterintuitive, Meta says the feature was not widely used, which played a major role in the decision to discontinue it.

Why Instagram Is Dropping Encrypted Chats

According to Meta, one of the main reasons behind the change is low adoption among users. A spokesperson told The Verge that “very few people” used end-to-end encrypted DMs on the platform. The company first introduced the feature in 2023, expanding its broader push toward encrypted messaging across its apps. However, the feature never gained widespread traction on Instagram, unlike on other Meta platforms such as WhatsApp.

What End-to-End Encryption Actually Does

End-to-end encryption is designed to keep conversations private by ensuring that only the sender and the recipient can read the contents of a message. Even the platform hosting the service cannot access those messages. This level of privacy protection has become common across messaging apps, where it helps safeguard communications from hackers, surveillance, and unauthorized access.

Regulatory Pressure May Also Be a Factor

Although Meta has cited low usage as the main reason, the move also arrives during growing scrutiny from regulators around the world. Governments and child safety groups have increasingly argued that end-to-end encryption can make it harder to detect harmful or illegal activity on messaging platforms. For example, legal and policy debates in several regions have focused on whether encrypted services should allow authorities to access certain data when investigating serious crimes.

What Happens to Existing Encrypted Chats

Instagram has already begun notifying users who rely on encrypted messaging. Those users are encouraged to download their encrypted chats and shared media before the feature is removed. After the cutoff date, encrypted conversations will no longer function within Instagram.

WhatsApp Remains Meta’s Encrypted Messaging Platform

Meta suggests that users who want fully encrypted conversations can still turn to WhatsApp, which continues to offer end-to-end encryption by default. This suggests that while Instagram may be stepping back from encrypted messaging, Meta is still maintaining privacy-focused communication through its other platforms.
