Meta announces Muse Image for GenAI image generation, available on Instagram first for now with a catch
Meta recently launched Muse Image, its first image generation model from Meta Superintelligence Labs, now available for free in Meta AI as of 7 July 2026. This advanced model uses complex visual reasoning to blend photos, edit background elements, and render legible, styled text for infographics. Available on Instagram, it will eventually come to other Meta products like Facebook and Whatsapp. However, there’s a catch, it can access your photos by default unless you opt out.
Tech, features and the future at Meta
Working with the Muse Spark model to handle mult-step reasoning, the new Muse Image offers over 30 new AI-powered story effects on Instagram and can generate visuals directly within WhatsApp chats. The model features deep integration, allowing users to @-mention public Instagram profiles to pull visual references into a prompt or restyle rooms using real products from Facebook Marketplace.
Meta AI on WhatsApp
Meta provides a specific setting for users to turn off this @-mention tagging feature if you’re worried about privacy. Looking ahead, Meta is already developing Muse Video, with further rollouts for Facebook, Messenger, and advertisers using Advantage plus creative expected in the coming weeks.
How to opt out of Meta’s Muse AI on Instagram
Here’s how to opt out on Instagram:
- Go to your Instagram account page and access the Settings menu (the three horizontal lines in the top right corner)
- Tap on Sharing and reuse
- Toggle off the options (Posts, Reels) under “Allow people to reuse your content on Instagram and with AI features at Meta”
