Dry and warm weather to persist in Latvia

· Latvian Public Media

This weekend will be cloudier on Saturday, but no significant precipitation is expected. Sunday will be sunny again throughout Latvia. The minimum temperature on weekend nights will be -5 to 0 degrees, and in some places in Latgale it will be -7 degrees in the early morning, but in the afternoon the air will warm up to +6 to +11 degrees in most of the country, with slightly cooler temperatures in some places in Latgale and on the coast, where the temperature will reach +3 to +5 C.

Next week will be mostly sunny, with no precipitation expected. At night, temperatures will hover around 0 degrees, but in the afternoons, it will be +10 to +15 C warm in many places. Only in some areas, mainly on the coast, will it still be cooler on those days when the wind blows from the sea.

This weather is likely to continue at least until mid-March, when the continuous snow cover will have melted in most of the country, but in Latgale it may still remain.

Due to the dry weather, evaporation will increase, reducing the amount of snowmelt water entering rivers and reducing the risk of large, destructive floods. However, hydrological forecasts show that the maximum flood level is expected next week on the banks of the Lielupe and its tributaries, as well as on the lower reaches of the Ogre and Gauja, and the potential formation of ice jams still poses a flood threat. Meanwhile, in the most frequently flooded sections of the Daugava River in the Augšdaugava, Līvāni, Jēkabpils, and Aizkraukle districts, the most dangerous situation will be at the end of March.
