Snow possible next week in Latvia

On Thursday night, rain is expected in the western and central parts of the country, while during the day it will rain in the east. Skies will be mostly cloudy, with the sun peeking through only occasionally. A gusty southwesterly wind will persist. The minimum nighttime temperature will be 1-6 degrees Celsius, the maximum daytime temperature 6-11 degrees, and up to 13 degrees in parts of Latgale.

On Friday and over the weekend, the weather will be mostly sunny. On Sunday, there will be more clouds in Kurzeme, but no significant precipitation is expected. Weekend nights will be colder, with temperatures dropping a few degrees below freezing in many places, but afternoon temperatures will mostly range from +10 to +15 C; it will be cooler in Kurzeme, especially on Sunday, when there will be less sunshine.

Next week, a cooler air mass will move into our region, bringing more frequent precipitation and less sunshine. Afternoon temperatures will mostly range from +2 to +10 C, while nighttime lows will be around -3 to +3 C.

Precipitation will mostly be rain, but sleet is also possible. Current forecasts do not predict the formation of a significant and persistent snow cover, though the ground may turn white for short periods.

March has so far been 4.5 degrees warmer than the climate norm, as temperatures have mostly been typical of mid-April. The Latvian Environment, Geology, and Meteorology Centre’s observation network has recorded 118 heat records.

The highest temperature this month was recorded on March 14th, when the air warmed up to 17.1 degrees in Liepāja and Pāvilosta.
