Bulgaria: Search for Missing 11-Year-Old Natalia Enters Fourth Day

The large-scale search for 11-year-old Natalia Asenova from the village of Konstantinovo near Varna entered its fourth consecutive day as police, gendarmerie, and dozens of volunteers continued efforts to locate the child and 40-year-old Asen Simeonov, who is suspected of abducting her from her mother's home.

Search teams initially planned to resume operations around 10 p.m. on Tuesday, but their plans changed after new reports suggested the pair had been seen near Provadiya. Shortly after 8 p.m., volunteers and law enforcement redirected their efforts toward the village of Barzitsa, where several witnesses claimed to have spotted a man and a young girl in nearby fields.

Throughout the evening, authorities received multiple tips, with the latest reports placing the pair in the area around Barzitsa. Police officers, gendarmerie units, and volunteers equipped with drones searched fields and difficult terrain between Barzitsa, Bozveliysko, and Tsarevtsi well past midnight. Despite hours of intensive operations, no confirmed trace of the missing girl or the wanted man was found.

Investigators say the search is now concentrated around the villages of Yunak and Barzitsa, approximately 30 kilometers from Konstantinovo, where the two are believed to have headed after the alleged abduction. The challenging landscape has complicated the operation, forcing teams to rely on drones and thermal imaging equipment during nighttime searches. Officers also attempted to seal off parts of the area in hopes of preventing an escape, but the effort has not yet produced results.

Authorities believe Simeonov is highly familiar with evading law enforcement. According to people close to the investigation, he has previously disappeared for several days during another large-scale police search, hiding in abandoned buildings while reportedly monitoring police activity through radio and television broadcasts. Because of that experience, investigators are deliberately withholding operational details to avoid providing him with information that could assist his movements.

Police also believe the suspect is capable of remaining hidden for extended periods without regular access to food or water, making the ongoing search significantly more difficult.

Meanwhile, Natalia's mother has publicly described what she says happened during the night her daughter disappeared. Speaking on television, she alleged that her former partner entered the family home before dawn while everyone was asleep. According to her account, he tied her up and assaulted her, leaving her with a broken arm. She said he threatened to kill her if Natalia refused to leave with him, prompting the frightened child to go voluntarily. "He threatened to kill me if she didn't go with him," the mother said.

Relatives say Natalia managed to contact a family member twice after being taken. According to them, during both calls she asked only one question: "Is my mother alive and safe?"

The case has also renewed attention to a previous restraining order reportedly issued against Simeonov. Natalia's sister said the protection order had once been in force but was later lifted. Organizations assisting victims of domestic violence have noted that in cases involving threats or abuse, a victim's testimony alone may be sufficient grounds for imposing and maintaining protective measures.

Family members have also claimed that the suspect is carrying a knife, adding to concerns for the child's safety, although investigators have not publicly confirmed that information.

Despite heavy rain that hampered overnight operations, search teams remain deployed across the area surrounding Yunak and Barzitsa. Volunteers note that the distance from Konstantinovo to the locations where the pair was reportedly seen could realistically have been covered on foot over the past several days, matching the timeline of the disappearance. Authorities continue to treat the latest eyewitness reports as the strongest leads available as the search enters its fourth day, with hopes focused on finding Natalia safe and returning her to her family.
