Bulgaria's National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH) has issued yellow and orange weather alerts for heavy rain and strong winds across most of the country on Tuesday, Oct. 13, with only Sofia City, Sofia Province, Pernik, Kyustendil and Blagoevgrad remaining under a green, low-risk alert.

A first-degree yellow warning covers 17 regions. Of these, 16 are under alert for heavy rainfall, while one faces warnings for both significant rain and strong winds. A second-degree orange alert has been issued for seven regions: Varna, Burgas, Shumen, Yambol, Haskovo, Kardzhali and Smolyan. Four of them are warned of significant rainfall, while the other three face risks from both heavy rain and strong winds.

A moderate northerly wind is expected nationwide, temporarily strengthening in the eastern half of the country. Temperatures will change little throughout the day, with highs of 10°C to 15°C and around 11°C in Sofia.

Mountain areas will experience cloudy, windy and rainy conditions, with snow expected above approximately 1,700 meters. Significant precipitation is forecast in the Central Balkan, Rhodope, Strandzha and Sakar mountain regions. Temperatures will reach about 6°C at an altitude of 1,200 meters and around 1°C at 2,000 meters.

The Black Sea coast will also see cloudy, rainy and windy weather, with substantial rainfall expected in some areas during the afternoon. Winds will blow from the north at moderate speeds, occasionally becoming strong. Maximum temperatures will range from 15°C to 17°C, sea water temperatures will be 20°C to 21°C, and wave conditions will reach around 2 to 3 on the Douglas scale.

Mostly cloudy skies will persist across much of Bulgaria on Wednesday, with rain continuing in parts of the south and east. Precipitation will be lighter and gradually subside. Winds from the north-northwest will be light to moderate, occasionally strengthening in eastern areas. Temperatures will remain low for mid-October, with minimums of 3°C to 8°C and maximums of 11°C to 16°C.

Rain is expected to stop throughout the country overnight into Thursday. Cloud cover will then decrease, bringing sunny conditions to many areas, although eastern Bulgaria will remain windy. Daytime temperatures are forecast to rise slightly.
