Finnish data & AI company Aiven starts India operations, bets on AI-ready infrastructure

Finnish cloud data infrastructure company Aiven has launched its India operations, betting on rising enterprise demand for AI-ready, cloud-agnostic and open-source data platforms. The company has opened its first India office in Bengaluru and plans to use the country as a base for its wider Asia-Pacific expansion.

While the company has been working in India for some time, Aiven formally announced its India operations at an event in New Delhi on September 24, held in association with the Finnish Embassy. According to the company, its India push is not limited to selling its products locally, with the company looking to build a local team and partner ecosystem as businesses increase spending on cloud infrastructure, artificial intelligence, real-time analytics and modern applications.

“The AI conversation is ultimately a data conversation. Enterprises can build ambitious AI applications only when the data foundation underneath them is scalable, reliable and flexible. India has the developer talent, digital businesses and cloud momentum to become one of APAC’s most important markets for this transformation,” said Ken Manuja, APAC Sales Leader, Aiven.

So, what does Aiven actually do?

Aiven is a Finnish cloud data infrastructure company that helps businesses manage the systems they use to store, process and move data. Its platform provides managed versions of open-source technologies such as Apache Kafka, PostgreSQL, MySQL, ClickHouse, OpenSearch, Valkey and DataHub.

In simple terms, Aiven takes care of much of the infrastructure work that comes with running these data systems. Businesses can use the services across major cloud environments rather than having to manage everything themselves. The service is particularly aimed at companies dealing with large amounts of data or building applications that need data to move between different systems in real time.

According to Aiven, one of its key focus areas in India will be helping businesses build and manage the data infrastructure needed for AI and real-time applications. As companies use more AI, they need systems that can store, process and stream large amounts of data, which is where Aiven's platform comes in.

The company currently has around 15 employees in India and plans to expand its local team as the business grows. The hiring will cover areas including sales, partnerships, customer success and solutions engineering, while the Bengaluru team will work with Aiven's wider global workforce.

In India, Aiven also plans to work with cloud providers, technology companies, consultants and systems integrators. It will also engage with developer and open-source communities through events and knowledge-sharing programmes.
