For a long time, the Classic 500 represented the definitive Royal Enfield experience. It was for the rider that wanted to breach the 350cc barrier. But as emission regulations tightened and Royal Enfield modernised its line-up, the Classic 500 quietly disappeared, leaving behind a noticeable gap in the company’s portfolio. The Royal Enfield Classic 650 arrives as the closest thing yet to a spiritual successor. That’s because it chases the same
idea, a big, charismatic retro roadster that prioritises feel and presence over outright performance figures. Unlike the smaller Classic 350, the Classic 650 feels purpose-built to sit at the top of the Classic hierarchy.
The proportions are larger, the stance more substantial, and the road presence unmistakably premium. More importantly, it finally combines the timeless Classic silhouette with Royal Enfield’s 648cc parallel-twin motor, an engine that has already proven itself. That is precisely why it makes for such an interesting addition to our long-term fleet. The Classic 650 is not trying to reinvent the retro motorcycle formula. Instead, it appears to refine and mature it into something more effortless, more relaxed, and perhaps more desirable than ever before. Over the coming months, we will find out whether this motorcycle truly captures the spirit of the old Classic 500, and whether it is a natural step-up from the 350s. Because if it does, the Classic 650 could end up being far more important than just a new variant.
