Maruti Suzuki is set to mark a major milestone in India's alternative-fuel mobility journey with the unveiling of the country's first mass-market flex-fuel passenger vehicle today, ahead of World Environment Day. The launch event, scheduled at Delhi's Taj Palace, will be attended by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari and Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri.

The upcoming model will become the first passenger vehicle in India capable of running on ethanol-petrol blends ranging from E20 to E100, including pure ethanol. Its introduction comes shortly after the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways updated vehicle testing and certification norms to accommodate E100-compatible vehicles, paving the way for automakers to bring such products to the Indian market.

Which model is expected to be unveiled?

Maruti Suzuki has not officially revealed the identity of the vehicle. However, it is expected that it could either be the WagonR Flex Fuel or the Fronx Flex Fuel.

The WagonR Flex Fuel prototype was showcased at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2024 and was developed specifically to operate on ethanol blends between E20 and E85. Meanwhile, Suzuki displayed a flex-fuel version of the Fronx at the Japan Mobility Show 2025, signalling the company's broader commitment towards ethanol-compatible technologies.

Why is this launch significant?

The launch represents a key step in India's strategy to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels. According to Nitin Gadkari, nearly 85 per cent of India's petrol, diesel and natural gas requirements are currently met through imports. Increasing the use of domestically produced biofuels such as ethanol could help reduce the country's fuel import bill, improve energy security and lower vehicular emissions.

The government also sees ethanol production as a means of strengthening the rural economy by creating additional demand for agricultural feedstock, including sugarcane and grain-based raw materials.

What is a flex-fuel vehicle?

A flex-fuel vehicle is designed to run on varying blends of petrol and ethanol. Unlike conventional petrol-powered cars, flex-fuel models require specialised fuel-system components capable of handling higher ethanol concentrations.

Parts such as fuel lines, injectors, seals and engine-management systems must be modified because ethanol is more corrosive than petrol and absorbs moisture more readily. The engine calibration is also adjusted to ensure optimal performance across different fuel blends.

Will E100 fuel be widely available?

While the technology is now ready, fuel availability remains a challenge. India currently follows the E20 petrol standard, which contains up to 20 per cent ethanol blending. High-ethanol fuels such as E85 and E100 are not yet widely available across the country.

What does it mean for the Indian auto industry?

Maruti Suzuki's flex-fuel vehicle could serve as a catalyst for wider adoption of ethanol-powered mobility. Several manufacturers, including Tata Motors are already working on flex-fuel technologies and are expected to introduce more such products in the coming years.

As India diversifies its transportation energy mix, flex-fuel vehicles are likely to emerge as an important bridge between conventional internal-combustion engines and future zero-emission mobility solutions.
