- WhatsApp Plus allows users to pin up to 20 chats
WhatsApp has always been free, and for most people, that has been more than enough. But Meta is now giving users the option to pay a little extra for a more personalised experience. WhatsApp Plus, the app's first-ever subscription plan, has officially rolled out for Android and iOS users in India. The move followed Meta’s announcement last month of rolling out a subscription plan for all its major social media platforms: WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook.
So what do you actually get in WhatsApp Plus
At Rs 79 a month, WhatsApp Plus is essentially a customisation pack. The plan lets you change the look of the app with 18 new colour themes such as Vibrant Blue, Royal Purple, Forest Green, Fuchsia Pink, and more. You can also swap out the default app icon with one of 14 new designs, ranging from clean and minimal to more artistic options.
Beyond the visuals, the subscription also gets you 10 exclusive ringtones with names like Flutter, Ripple, Meadow, and Carnival, along with exclusive sticker packs and the ability to pin up to 20 chats at the top of your chat list, a handy upgrade from the standard limit. You also get more control over your chat lists, with the option to create and customise them the way you like.
It is worth noting that WhatsApp Plus does not touch any of the core features. Calls, status updates, and end-to-end encryption all stay exactly as they are and remain free for everyone.
How to subscribe to WhatsApp Plus
Subscribing to WhatsApp Plus is simple and straightforward. Open WhatsApp and go to Settings, then tap on Subscriptions and select WhatsApp Plus. Tap Continue, review the payment details, and confirm your purchase. Payments are processed through the Google Play Store. Once done, you will receive a notification confirming that your WhatsApp Plus subscription is active. If you do not see the WhatsApp Plus option under Subscriptions, the plan may not have rolled out to your account just yet. It is worth checking back in a few days.
The good news is that new subscribers get the first month for free before the Rs 79 monthly charge kicks in. After subscribing, all your benefits will be listed under Settings, then Subscriptions, then WhatsApp Plus. Simply tap on any feature to get started.
Is it worth it
That really depends on how much you care about personalising your WhatsApp. If you are someone who uses the app all day and wants it to feel a little more tailored to you, Rs 79 a month may not be a big ask to you. But if you are happy with the way WhatsApp already looks and works, there is nothing here that changes the core experience, and you are not missing out on anything essential by skipping it.
