Fourth-gen of this popular hatchback gets a major overhaul, India launch in 2027

Hyundai has revealed the fourth-generation i20 overseas, showcasing a bold new design, larger digital displays and upgraded technology. The premium hatchback is expected to make its way to India in 2027.

Hyundai has unveiled the fourth-generation i20 in Brazil, previewing a comprehensive redesign for the popular premium hatchback. The latest model adopts a sharper exterior and a more technology-focused cabin. While Hyundai has not confirmed launch timelines for India, the new-generation i20 is expected to arrive sometime in 2027.

Sharper design with full-width lighting elements

The new i20 introduces a far more futuristic design language. The front fascia is dominated by split LED headlamps and distinctive Y-shaped daytime running lights connected by a slim illuminated strip stretching across the width of the car. A sculpted bonnet, larger air intakes and a revised bumper contribute to a more aggressive stance.

Hyundai has also integrated sensors into the front bumper, indicating the availability of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) on higher variants.

Viewed from the side, the hatchback appears cleaner and more streamlined than before. Newly designed 17-inch alloy wheels fill the arches, while black body cladding along the lower sections adds visual contrast. The rear quarter glass seen on the current model has been replaced by a blacked-out trim piece, giving the profile a more contemporary look.

At the rear, connected LED tail-lamps mirror the front lighting theme. A reshaped tailgate, black bumper treatment and silver skid-plate-style insert further distinguish the new model from its predecessor.

Cabin receives major technology upgrade

Inside, Hyundai has significantly modernised the i20's interior. The dashboard is centred around a curved display panel integrating a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a larger infotainment touchscreen expected to measure 12.3 inches.

A newly designed three-spoke steering wheel, complete with paddle shifters, replaces the unit used in the current car.

The centre stack features a redesigned climate-control interface with touch-sensitive controls and a rotary dial for fan-speed adjustment.

The cabin adopts a dual-tone theme and receives semi-leatherette upholstery with subtle i20 branding. Rear-seat occupants benefit from a 60:40 split-folding bench, adjustable headrests and three-point seatbelts for all passengers. The boot capacity stands at 346 litres, offering a useful increase over the India-spec model currently on sale.

Interestingly, the Brazilian-spec version does not feature a sunroof, though Hyundai could continue offering one on higher trims in India.

Turbocharged petrol engine produces up to 113bhp

For Brazil, Hyundai will offer the new i20 with two versions of its 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine. The naturally aspirated unit develops up to 79bhp and 100Nm when running on ethanol, while petrol operation slightly reduces output figures.

Performance-focused buyers can opt for the turbocharged direct-injection variant, which generates 113bhp and 172Nm of torque. Peak torque arrives from just 1,500rpm, promising improved drivability in urban conditions as well as stronger overtaking performance.

What could India get?

Although Hyundai has not announced specifications for the Indian market, the next-generation i20 is expected to retain familiar petrol engine options. The company may continue with the existing 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol motor while also offering a turbocharged alternative. Hyundai's upcoming 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine could also be a contender for the hatchback, depending on future market strategy.

The new i20 will be offered in multiple variants overseas, including Comfort, Limited, X Line, Platinum and Ultimate trims. More details regarding global specifications and potential India plans are expected closer to launch.
