Yesterday marked the 10th anniversary of Sony’s flagship 1000X headphone series. To celebrate the milestone, the company unveiled the 1000X “The ColleXion” Edition headphones, which build upon the noise-cancellation technology introduced with last year’s Sony WH-1000XM6. The new headphones are positioned above the WH-1000XM6 and feature a redesigned chassis, upgraded audio tuning, and more premium materials. With the 1000X “The ColleXion” Edition, Sony appears to be targeting users looking for a more luxurious version of its flagship headphones with enhanced refinements and upgraded features.
Sony 1000X “The ColleXion” design, specs and features
Starting with the design, Sony has given the 1000X “The ColleXion” a closed-back design, meaning the ear cups are sealed to block outside noise and keep the sound focused in your ears. It uses custom 30mm dynamic drivers for these headphones. The dome inside those speakers — the part that actually moves to produce sound — is made from a special carbon material that's both stiff and lightweight. The "soft edge" around it helps the dome move more smoothly. The goal of all this is to make the sound cleaner and more detailed — so different instruments don't bleed into each other, vocals sound crisp, and high-pitched sounds like cymbals or strings come through clearly.
The company claims that the Sony 1000X “The ColleXion” is the brand’s first model to come with the DSEE Ultimate feature. This feature uses Edge AI to restore detail to compressed music files in real time. The headphones support 360 Reality Audio Upmix, which makes audio feel more spatial and immersive, with three modes: Music, Cinema, and Game — switchable via a physical button on the headphones themselves.
For noise cancellation, Sony has borrowed the same system from its WH-1000XM6, which is already one of the best in the business. It uses 12 microphones and automatically adjusts the level of noise cancellation depending on where you are and what's around you. You also get Ambient Sound Mode for when you need to hear your surroundings, and Quick Attention, which temporarily lets sound in when you need to have a quick conversation without taking the headphones off.
Wired and powered on, these headphones can reproduce an extremely wide range of sound, from deep bass all the way to the upper limits of human hearing and beyond. Over Bluetooth, you get the standard range with regular codecs, but switch to LDAC (Sony's high-quality wireless codec) and it matches the wired performance.
On the connectivity side, it runs Bluetooth 6.0, supports multipoint, meaning you can stay connected to two devices at once — and works with all major audio codecs including SBC, AAC, LDAC, and LC3. Wireless range is up to 10 metres. Sensitivity and impedance specs suggest these will get loud easily and play nicely with most audio sources.
According to Sony, the 1000X “The ColleXion” Edition headphones can offer up to 24 hours of battery life with active noise cancellation enabled, and up to 32 hours with ANC turned off. For calls, the headphones are rated to deliver up to 16 hours of talk time with ANC on and up to 20 hours with ANC disabled.
The new headphone weighs approximately 320g. Inside the box, Sony bundles a carrying case along with a detachable 1.2-metre single-sided audio cable that features a gold-plated L-shaped stereo mini plug. The headphones also include accessibility-focused additions such as tactile control buttons, clearly marked left and right indicators, and a carrying case with a magnetic closure.
The Sony 1000X The Collexion price and availability
The Sony 1000X The Collexion is priced at $649 (around Rs 62,581) in the US and CAD 849.99 (around Rs 59,809) in Canada. Buyers can purchase it via Sony's official store, Best Buy, and Amazon. It comes in two colours — Platinum and Black.
Separately, Sony has added a new Sandstone finish to the existing WH-1000XM6, which previously came in Black, Midnight Blue, Platinum Silver, and Sand Pink.
