Maruti Suzuki Brezza facelift spied during emission testing, turbo-petrol under evaluation?
Fresh spy shots of the upcoming Maruti Suzuki Brezza facelift suggest more than cosmetic upgrades, with the test mule undergoing emission testing, hinting at a possible new turbo-petrol engine for the popular compact SUV.
by Auto Today · India TodayMaruti Suzuki is preparing a mid-life update for the highly successful Maruti Suzuki Brezza, and fresh spy shots of the facelifted SUV have now surfaced online, hinting at more than just cosmetic revisions. The latest test mule appears to be equipped with emission-testing apparatus, indicating that Maruti could be evaluating a new engine option for the updated Brezza.
The Brezza has remained one of India’s highest-selling SUVs since its introduction, thanks to its strong brand recall, practical package and extensive service network. While earlier test mules primarily revealed exterior and cabin tweaks, the presence of emission-testing equipment on the latest prototype points towards possible mechanical changes underneath the hood.
Smaller turbo-petrol engine could be on the cards
At present, the Brezza is powered exclusively by Maruti Suzuki’s 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, offered in both petrol and CNG forms. However, industry speculation now suggests the facelift could introduce the brand’s smaller 1.0-litre Boosterjet turbo-petrol engine, currently seen on the Maruti Suzuki Fronx.
A smaller-capacity engine would help the Brezza qualify for lower taxation applicable to sub-4-metre petrol vehicles with engines below 1.2 litres, potentially allowing Maruti Suzuki to offer a more aggressive entry-level price.
If the turbo-petrol option materialises, it would also address one of the Brezza’s biggest omissions in the segment, as rivals such as the Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet and Tata Nexon already offer turbocharged petrol engines.
The existing 1.5-litre petrol engine is still expected to continue in the line-up, especially for higher variants and CNG trims. Reports also indicate that the CNG versions may adopt an underbody-mounted tank setup, improving usable luggage space inside the cabin.
Subtle styling updates expected
Design revisions on the Brezza facelift appear evolutionary rather than radical. Spy images reveal a cleaner-looking front grille along with a revised bumper featuring reworked fog-lamp housings and a thicker silver skid-plate insert. The headlamp units seem largely unchanged, although the grille area appears to house a radar module, hinting at the possible introduction of ADAS functionality.
The rear section looks largely similar to the current SUV, with only minor bumper changes expected. The test mule was also seen running on newly designed alloy wheels, likely 16-inch units, while rear drum brakes continue to be retained.
Cabin likely to get bigger infotainment screen
Inside, the updated Brezza is expected to receive a larger 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen, replacing the current 9-inch system. Earlier sightings also hinted at a revised dashboard layout, fresh cabin trims and a new 6-speed manual gearbox, which could debut alongside the turbo-petrol engine.
Additional feature upgrades and new upholstery themes are also likely as Maruti aims to keep the Brezza competitive in an increasingly crowded compact SUV market.
Launch timeline
The facelifted Brezza is expected to make its debut around the festive season later this year, although a 2027 launch timeline remains possible depending on Maruti Suzuki’s final rollout plans.
