iPhone 18 Pro more value for money than iPhone 18? Leak reveals Apple's secret plan

Apple is expected to keep the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max at roughly the same price as the iPhone 17 Pro models, even as smartphone makers deal with rising memory and storage costs. The reason? Reports and analyst predictions suggest Apple may be trying to push more buyers towards its premium Pro lineup.

In Short

  • Apple may keep iPhone 18 Pro prices similar to current models despite rising component costs
  • Reports suggest the regular iPhone 18 could launch months after the Pro lineup
  • Analysts believe Apple wants more buyers to move towards premium Pro iPhones

Apple wants you to buy its Pro iPhones. For many users, the standard iPhone has always been the entry point into Apple’s ecosystem and often the better value-for-money option unless they wanted to spend extra for Pro-level features. However, Apple reportedly wants more users to move towards its premium models. And in order to convince buyers, recent reports suggest the company could end up making the iPhone 18 Pro feel like the better value option compared to the regular iPhone 18.

Now, the launch of the new iPhones is still months away, but over the past few days, there have been aggressive leaks and speculations suggesting Apple is planning a major shake-up for its 2026 iPhone strategy involving pricing, launch timing and product positioning.

According to analyst Jeff Pu, Apple is expected to keep the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max at roughly the same starting prices as the current Pro models– iPHone 17 Pro– despite rising memory costs and growing pressure on smartphone component pricing. The reason? Analysts believe Apple may want to make the Pro lineup feel more enticing to buyers.

There is definitely increasing pressure from rising RAM and component costs, so any pricing adjustments may instead happen through storage upgrades or changes elsewhere in the lineup rather than major hikes on the starting prices of the Pro models themselves.

At the same time, one of the reported reasons behind the possible split launch schedule is also to push the premium lineup further. Rumours suggest Apple could split the launch timeline for the iPhone 18 series. According to reports from Forbes contributor Ewan Spence and earlier supply-chain chatter, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max may launch first in September 2026, while the standard iPhone 18 and the iPhone 18 Air could arrive months later, possibly around March 2027. A similar timeline was earlier hinted at by Mark Gurman from Bloomberg.

According to analysts, this strategy could push more buyers towards the Pro lineup without directly forcing them there.

The reason is simple. Many iPhone users still upgrade during Apple’s traditional September launch window. If the regular iPhone 18 is unavailable during that period, buyers wanting the newest iPhone may have limited choices. They could either buy the older iPhone 17 series, wait several more months for the standard iPhone 18, or spend extra and move up to the iPhone 18 Pro.

That strategy could make the Pro models appear more attractive than ever before.

Apple may widen the gap between the standard iPhone and the Pro

It is not just the delayed launch or pricing tweaks. Reports also suggest Apple may continue widening the gap between the standard and Pro iPhones. Over the past few years, the company has increasingly reserved its best features for the Pro lineup, including higher refresh rate displays, more advanced cameras, premium materials and more powerful chipsets. Rumours indicate the iPhone 18 Pro range could continue that trend with stronger AI-focused performance and upgraded hardware aimed at supporting future Apple Intelligence features.

Meanwhile, for the standard model, Apple may only bring a handful of upgrades rather than major changes. At the same time, there is speculation that the regular iPhone 18 models could still see price increases despite offering fewer significant improvements.

According to analysts like Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple, like most consumer electronics companies, is dealing with rising RAM and storage costs. However, analysts believe Apple’s massive scale and supply-chain control could allow it to absorb some of those costs on the Pro models while potentially adjusting pricing elsewhere in the lineup.

Do note that none of these plans have been officially confirmed by Apple yet, so they should be taken with a pinch of salt. However, the analyst reports and leaks do suggest a possible strategy where Apple makes the iPhone 18 Pro feel less like an expensive upgrade and more like the smarter buy compared to the standard iPhone 18.
