Google is reportedly releasing another less-distractive device for your wrist this year. This is said to be neither like a Fitbit Air, which has no display, nor like a Pixel Watch, which is a kind of mini smartphone that sits on the wrist. It could be something that lies in between. The name of the purported device, Fitbit Edge, is expected to have a similar appearance to the Fitbit Charge. A device that Google hasn’t released a newer version of since 2023.
According to Android Headlines, the Fitbit Edge will sit in the middle of its wearable lineup. So, Fitbit Air is Google’s cheaper wearable and Pixel Watch 5 costs more, and the upcoming device is expected to sit right in the middle. Compared with the Fitbit Air, the Fitbit Edge also supports notifications, has similar battery life, and is said to work with Android and iOS. But it is also expected to support a limited number of apps, such as Google Maps, YouTube Music, and Find My Phone, like the Pixel Watch 5. However, the device is said to have an advantage over the Pixel Watch 5 in terms of battery life and software, as the Pixel Watch 5 only runs on Wear OS and only works on Android.
Fitbit Edge Design
The images released by Android Headlines of the purported fitness band show an oval, small-ish display. It has an elongated button that sits on the side of the tracker and a set of sensors on the back. It doesn’t appear to have the same sensor setup as the Pixel Watch 5. Instead, it looks closer to the Fitbit Air, with the possibility of additional sensors for tracking more health metrics.
It also features pinch mechanisms on the back to make it easier to swap the band. This is different from the Pixel Watch, but that makes sense given the device’s different shape.
What else could the Fitbit Edge offer
Similar to the earlier model, the Fitbit Charge, the upcoming fitness tracker could have a battery life of up to 7 days and offer access to limited applications such as Google Maps, YouTube Music, and Find My Phone. It may also have a reliable GPS, elevation tracking via its altimeter, and automatic activity recognition. So, individuals who want a fitness tracker that provides limited, necessary access to a smartphone but doesn't bombard them with tons of wrist notifications could find the Fitbit Edge a good option.
Fitbit Edge Colour
The Fitbit Edge is expected to ship with lots of different colour options. In other words, we don’t have an exact number yet. It could come in black, green and orange, which could match up with Google’s Obsidian, Olive, and Canyon colours from the Pixel 11 Pro series. More colour options could be revealed in the coming days.
The report states that, unlike the Fitbit Air, the Pixel Watch 5 has a Stephen Curry edition. However, this time, Fitbit Edge may not get a similar edition. Though the possibility cannot be completely ruled out.
Fitbit Edge price and availability
Pricing is harder to predict at this stage. Assuming Google prices it between the Fitbit Air and the Pixel Watch 5, the report assumes the Fitbit Edge could be priced somewhere around $149 to $199 (around Rs 14,345 to Rs 19,159) . The final price will likely depend on how Google positions the new tracker in its wearable lineup.
The Fitbit Edge could make its debut as early as this month, especially if Google wants the tracker to be available in time for the holiday shopping season. A later launch could mean missing out on one of the busiest periods for consumer electronics sales.
