China has released fresh footage of its DF-17 hypersonic missile system, one of the world's first operational hypersonic glide weapon systems, as part of celebrations marking the 99th anniversary of the People's Liberation Army (PLA).

The rare footage showed at least six DF-17 launch vehicles together, underscoring that the missile has entered widespread operational service with the PLA Rocket Force.

Chinese military affairs expert Zhang Junshe told the state-run Global Times that the DF-17 is a key part of China's missile force and could reshape modern air-defence operations.

WHAT IS DF-17 HYPERSONIC MISSILE?

The Dong Feng-17 (DF-17) is a medium-range ballistic missile developed by China that carries a hypersonic glide vehicle (HGV) instead of a conventional ballistic re-entry vehicle.

Unlike traditional ballistic missiles, which follow a predictable arc, the DF-17 launches its glide vehicle to high altitude before it separates and glides toward its target at hypersonic speeds, which is above Mach 5 or five times the speed of sound, while performing evasive manoeuvres.

This combination of speed and manoeuvrability makes it significantly harder to detect, track and intercept using existing missile defence systems.
