As engineering admissions gather pace across the country, students are increasingly weighing specialised BTech programmes alongside conventional Computer Science courses. Among the most popular choices are Cybersecurity and Data Science, two disciplines that promise strong career prospects but prepare students for distinct roles in the technology industry.

According to Dr Amogh Deshmukh, Assistant Professor and Assistant Dean of Student Affairs at the School of Technology, Woxsen University, students often find themselves confused between the two streams during the admission season. While both appear futuristic and offer attractive career opportunities, he said they train students for very different professional paths, making it important to understand the nature of each discipline before making a choice.

Deshmukh explained that a BTech in Cybersecurity prepares students to protect digital systems from evolving threats. In addition to core computer science concepts, the curriculum typically includes network security, cryptography, ethical hacking, digital forensics, cloud security, application security and, increasingly, the security of AI systems.

Students are trained to understand how attackers think so they can build stronger digital defences.

A BTech in Data Science, on the other hand, focuses on extracting meaningful insights from data.

Drawing a distinction between the two fields, Deshmukh said cybersecurity is centred on defending digital systems, while data science is about analysing data to solve problems and support decision-making.

Cybersecurity professionals spend much of their time identifying vulnerabilities, responding to security incidents and ensuring compliance. Data scientists, in contrast, work with datasets, develop machine learning models, conduct experiments and answer business questions using data.

He also pointed out that the two disciplines suit different temperaments. Cybersecurity rewards individuals who are detail-oriented and enjoy solving complex security challenges, where even a minor oversight can have significant consequences. Data science, meanwhile, is better suited to those who enjoy mathematics, statistics and uncovering patterns through analysis.

Deshmukh further noted that data science places greater emphasis on statistics and linear algebra, whereas cybersecurity relies more heavily on discrete mathematics, cryptographic principles and systems knowledge. At the same time, the two domains are increasingly intersecting, with cybersecurity teams using machine learning to detect threats and data professionals focusing on securing the data pipelines they develop.

Importantly, he noted that opportunities in both fields extend well beyond traditional IT companies. Banks, hospitals, e-commerce firms, manufacturing companies and government organisations increasingly require professionals who can either secure digital infrastructure or derive insights from large volumes of data.

Discussing placements, Deshmukh said demand remains strong for graduates from both disciplines, although hiring trends differ.

Data science offers broader hiring opportunities across product companies, fintech, healthcare analytics firms and startups. However, competition at the entry level tends to be higher because of the large number of graduates entering the field.

Based on his experience working with students, Deshmukh said candidates who complement their degree with industry-recognised certifications, internships and practical projects generally perform better during placements than those who rely solely on their academic qualification.

Students who enjoy mathematics, identifying patterns and using data to influence business or policy decisions may find Data Science a better fit.

Rather than focusing only on salary figures, Deshmukh advised students to understand the day-to-day nature of each profession before making a decision. He recommended exploring beginner cybersecurity capture-the-flag challenges as well as working on introductory Kaggle datasets to determine which field genuinely holds their interest.

According to him, both cybersecurity and data science are expected to play a significant role in shaping India's technology landscape in the coming years, and students are likely to make better career choices when they align their interests with the work each discipline actually involves.
