The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) has launched an e-Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence. The programme is being offered through IIT Bombay’s Educational Outreach initiative. The ePGD course is designed for software developers, engineers, IT professionals and data scientists and fresh graduates with a basic understanding of computer science.

IIT Bombay faculty will deliver the programme, with Great Learning as the EdTech partner.

According to an IIT Bombay statement released in this regard, the programme seeks to combine core computer science concepts with developments in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. It includes synchronous and asynchronous online learning as well as an in-person campus immersion component.

The institute, according to PTI, said the programme is intended to provide learners with a deeper understanding of the foundations of computer science and AI rather than focusing only on the use of AI tools.

Prof Vinay J Ribeiro, Faculty Coordinator for the ePGD in CS and AI at IIT Bombay's Department of Computer Science and Engineering, said the programme would help learners understand computer science and AI at a foundational level and adapt to an increasingly AI-centric world.

WHAT WILL THE IIT BOMBAY CS AND AI EPGD COVER?

The ePGD in Computer Science and Engineering requires learners to complete 36 credits. The courses are organised across three broad areas: advanced programming, computing systems, and Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. Participants must complete at least one course from each of the three baskets.

IIT Bombay describes the programme as a rigorous postgraduate qualification rather than a short-term bootcamp or a basic skilling course. It is aimed at learners who already have a foundational understanding of computer science and want to deepen their conceptual and technical knowledge.

OTHER EPGD COURSES AT IIT BOMBAY?

The new CS and AI programme is part of a wider ePGD portfolio being offered by IIT Bombay through its Educational Outreach initiative. The institute currently lists programmes in areas including Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, E-Mobility, Computer Science and Engineering, Interaction Design, IC Design in Practice and Digital Governance.

Artificial Intelligence and Data Science: The programme covers areas such as statistical foundations, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Generative AI and Natural Language Processing, with a focus on practical applications. IIT Bombay's programme requires learners to complete 36 credits.

Interaction Design: Offered through IIT Bombay's IDC School of Design, the ePGD in Interaction Design is aimed at working professionals seeking skills in user experience, interaction design and human-computer interaction. Learners can accumulate credits across prescribed courses and claim the diploma after earning at least 36 credits.

E-Mobility: IIT Bombay has also introduced an industry-focused ePGD in E-Mobility, covering areas related to electric vehicle technology and powertrains. The programme was launched through the C1973 Class of 1973 EV Power Train Lab.

IC Design in Practice and Digital Governance: These are also listed among IIT Bombay's ePGD offerings under its Educational Outreach programmes.

IIT Bombay says its ePGD programmes are designed as course-based programmes delivered by institute faculty. Participants can earn 36 credits that can be saved in the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC), while the institute also provides multiple exit options through individual course credits.

The expansion of these programmes comes as IIT Bombay increasingly uses its Educational Outreach platform to extend postgraduate-level learning to working professionals, recent graduates and learners who may not be able to pursue a conventional full-time programme on campus.
