A Bangladeshi waiter at a restaurant in Italy made derogatory remarks about India, triggering a heated altercation with a group of Indian women who confronted him and eventually forced an apology.
A video of the confrontation has gone viral on social media after Instagram user Khushi Dubey shared it.
In the video, the waiter is seen speaking to the women who were seated outdoors at the restaurant, and referring to them as being from “f***ing India.”
“F**k off you, I call the police, I’m out of here,” the waiter was heard saying. One of the women immediately objected, saying, “Mind your language. We are ladies first of all, okay?”
As the argument escalated, the waiter repeatedly accused the women of lying and questioned their version of events. When the women asked him to repeat what he had said earlier, he allegedly repeated the remark, saying, “You are f***ing India.”
The women, however, insisted that the waiter had initiated the confrontation and behaved disrespectfully towards them. “Mr Hussain, you started first. Be respectful, you should know how to respect women,” one of them said.
Khushi Dubey, meanwhile, alleged in the caption of her post that the group faced discrimination because they were Indian.
“This is what happened to us in Italy. He started disrespecting India and us because we were Indians. Police came and helped us. We are grateful to Italy Police,” Dubey wrote in the text overlay.
She also said that Indians are not always at fault and that, at times, they become targets of discrimination abroad.
Towards the end of the video, after repeatedly confronting the waiter over his remarks, the women forced him to apologise, with the man heard saying, “I am sorry.”
It remains unclear what triggered the argument though.
The video has sparked widespread discussion online, with several social media users condemning the alleged discriminatory remarks and praising the women for standing their ground.
