Audi A2 e-tron: Meet the most efficient Audi ever built

Audi has revealed new details of the upcoming A2 e-tron, confirming it as its most energy-efficient production model yet. The compact electric hatchback will debut later this year with a claimed efficiency of 7.81km/kWh.

Audi has revealed technical details of the upcoming A2 e-tron ahead of its global debut later this year, and the headline number is a significant one. Equipped with an optional efficiency package, the electric hatchback delivers a preliminary WLTP energy consumption figure of just 12.8kWh/100km, or 7.81km/kWh, making it the most energy-efficient production Audi ever developed.

The new model revives the spirit of the original Audi A2, which gained a reputation for prioritising fuel economy over outright performance. Audi says the electric successor follows the same philosophy, using clever engineering instead of simply fitting a larger battery to maximise driving range.

According to Gernot Dollner, CEO of Audi AG, the original A2's efficiency-focused approach has inspired the new electric model. The company says the A2 e-tron has been designed to combine low energy consumption with everyday practicality, rather than chasing headline battery sizes.

Aerodynamics play the biggest role

Much of the A2 e-tron's efficiency comes from extensive aerodynamic optimisation. The hatchback records a drag coefficient of 0.24, the lowest of any compact Audi to date.

Its rounded nose, sweeping roofline and sharply cut rear profile are complemented by some airflow management features, including air curtains, wheel-arch gap reducers, underbody optimisation and an active front cooling intake. Under normal driving conditions, the intake remains closed to reduce aerodynamic drag, only opening during rapid charging, hard acceleration or high ambient temperatures when additional cooling is required.

Audi claims these aerodynamic improvements alone lower energy consumption by up to 0.9kWh/100km compared with an equivalent A2 e-tron without the Efficiency Package.

Smarter motor, not just a bigger battery

Audi says the electric drivetrain itself is around 10 percent more efficient than its previous-generation systems.

The improvements come from several engineering changes. Silicon carbide (SiC) power electronics reduce switching losses, while thinner motor laminations cut internal energy losses. The stator has been redesigned with a new winding configuration to improve efficiency across commonly used operating speeds. Meanwhile, a low-friction transmission oil and a tall 10.2:1 gear ratio help reduce energy consumption during highway driving.

Rather than focusing on outright performance figures, Audi says the system has been optimised specifically for real-world driving efficiency.

61kWh LFP battery prioritises durability

The entry-level A2 e-tron uses a 61kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery built using a cell-to-pack architecture, where the battery cells are integrated directly into the pack instead of being grouped into modules. This improves packaging efficiency while freeing up additional space.

Audi says LFP chemistry offers longer service life, greater thermal stability and allows owners to routinely charge the battery to 100 percent without the degradation concerns typically associated with nickel-rich battery chemistries.

The company has also revised the battery's thermal management strategy, improving wallbox charging efficiency to 89.6 percent, meaning less energy is lost during AC charging.

Based on its usable battery capacity and the claimed efficiency figure, the entry-level A2 e-tron is expected to deliver a WLTP driving range of approximately 453km.

The A2 e-tron also introduces bidirectional charging capability. Owners will be able to use Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality to power external electrical appliances directly from the car, while Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) support allows the vehicle to function as a home energy storage system when paired with Audi's compatible charging hardware. Initially, V2H functionality will be offered in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Global debut later this year

Audi has confirmed that the A2 e-tron will make its world premiere in fall 2026 as the brand's new entry-level electric model. While the company has only detailed the 140kW (190bhp) rear-wheel-drive variant so far, additional battery and powertrain options are expected to follow after launch.
