In Short

  • Southwest monsoon to bring widespread rain across India on June 30
  • Monsoon advancing into Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand
  • Heatwave conditions persist in Delhi, Haryana and Chandigarh but to ease by July 4

The southwest monsoon is set to bring widespread rain across large parts of India on Tuesday, June 30, even as heatwave conditions continue over Delhi, Haryana and adjoining areas before gradually easing later this week.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in isolated places over Assam and Meghalaya, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, Bihar, Goa, Maharashtra, coastal parts of Karnataka and Kerala.

Heavy rainfall has also been forecast for Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Odisha, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and parts of Karnataka.

MONSOON TO ADVANCE, RAIN TO GROW INTENSE

The IMD said conditions remain favourable for the southwest monsoon to advance further into more parts of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand over the next few days.

The monsoon has already become active across much of central, eastern and northeastern India, increasing rainfall activity over several regions.

The heaviest rainfall on June 30 is expected over the northeastern states and the west coast, where the monsoon remains particularly active.

The IMD has forecast isolated extremely heavy rainfall over Assam and Meghalaya, while widespread rain is likely to continue across the Northeast through the first week of July.

Rainfall activity is also expected to remain vigorous over the Konkan coast, Goa and parts of Karnataka and Kerala as moisture-laden southwesterly winds continue to strengthen.

Apart from heavy rain, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph are likely across large parts of eastern, central and peninsular India.

These storm systems are expected to accompany the advancing monsoon, bringing brief but intense spells of rain to several regions, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

NORTHERN REGIONS TO REMAIN HOT

Despite the advancing monsoon, heatwave conditions are expected to persist in isolated parts of Delhi, Haryana and Chandigarh on June 30.

However, the IMD has forecast a gradual fall of 4-5°C in maximum temperatures across northwest India by July 4 as monsoon winds strengthen and rainfall activity becomes more widespread.

The prolonged spell of above-normal temperatures over northwest India has delayed widespread relief from the summer heat, but the expanding monsoon is expected to bring cooler conditions over the coming days.

For Delhi-NCR, this means the prevailing hot and humid weather is likely to give way to more frequent showers and a gradual moderation in daytime temperatures as the monsoon advances further into the region.

The change in weather is linked to the continued advance of the southwest monsoon, which normally covers most parts of northwest India by early July.

As rain-bearing winds spread further inland over the next few days, temperatures are expected to moderate across the region, marking the much-awaited transition from summer heat to the monsoon season.
