Monsoon's final punch: Heavy rain to drench Odisha, Andhra Pradesh on this date

A Bay of Bengal low-pressure area is set to intensify and move towards the Odisha-Andhra Pradesh coast. The system is expected to bring extremely heavy rain even as monsoon withdrawal begins elsewhere.

The southwest monsoon is set to deliver another spell of heavy rain over parts of eastern India as a well-marked low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify and move towards the Odisha-Andhra Pradesh coast this week.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the low-pressure area over the eastcentral Bay of Bengal moved west-northwestwards and lay as a well-marked low-pressure area over the eastcentral and adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal at 5:30 am IST on September 21.

The weather system is likely to continue moving west-northwestwards and intensify into a depression over the westcentral Bay of Bengal within the next 24 hours.

It is then expected to strengthen further into a deep depression over the westcentral and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal during the subsequent 24 hours.

The system is forecast to maintain its west-northwestward movement and reach near the north Andhra Pradesh–south Odisha coasts around the forenoon of September 23.

The approaching system is expected to trigger a significant spell of rainfall over Odisha and Andhra Pradesh.

IMD's latest warnings show extremely heavy rainfall is expected over Odisha on September 23 and 24, following very heavy rain on September 22. Heavy rain is expected to continue over the state through September 27.

Coastal Andhra Pradesh is also expected to see very heavy rainfall on September 22, followed by extremely heavy rain on September 23 and 24, accompanied by thunderstorms and strong surface winds.

The system comes as the southwest monsoon enters its withdrawal phase over parts of the country. The IMD has said monsoon withdrawal is likely to begin from parts of Gujarat over the next two to three days, even as the Bay of Bengal system brings renewed rainfall to eastern and central India.

The latest satellite imagery from INSAT-3DS shows a large area of organised clouding over the Bay of Bengal and adjoining parts of eastern India, associated with the active weather system.
