MacBook Neo 2 said to fix the biggest problem with Apple's budget laptop

Apple is reportedly preparing the MacBook Neo 2 with 12GB RAM and an A19 Pro chip, addressing one of the biggest limitations of its budget laptop. The upgrade could also make the Neo 2 better suited to Apple's newer AI features.

Apple's most affordable MacBook could be getting the upgrade that matters most for everyday users. The next-generation MacBook Neo is reportedly in development with more RAM and a faster chip, potentially addressing one of the biggest limitations of the first model. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is working on the MacBook Neo 2 with an A19 Pro chip and 12GB of RAM. That would be a significant jump from the current MacBook Neo, which uses an A18 Pro chip paired with 8GB of memory.

The extra RAM could make the biggest difference

The current MacBook Neo has already surprised users with how much it can handle despite its entry-level positioning. The laptop has been shown to cope with everyday workloads comfortably, including having dozens of browser tabs open at the same time.

For most users who mainly browse the web, stream content, work on documents, use productivity apps and handle other routine tasks, 8GB of RAM can be enough on macOS. However, memory becomes more important when several demanding applications are running together or when users start pushing the machine towards heavier workloads. That is where the reported 12GB configuration could make the MacBook Neo 2 more appealing. A 50 per cent increase in RAM would give the laptop more headroom and could help it stay responsive as workloads become more demanding.

There is another reason the upgrade could matter. Apple is adding more AI capabilities to macOS, and some of the newer features are expected to require 12GB of memory. Giving the Neo 2 more RAM could therefore help it support these features without feeling as constrained as the current model.

A faster chip is also tipped

The RAM upgrade will reportedly come alongside Apple’s newer A19 Pro chip. That means the MacBook Neo 2 may not simply have more memory, but could also deliver a performance boost over the current generation.

The first MacBook Neo launched with the A18 Pro chip and quickly established itself as an unusual product in Apple's lineup: a relatively inexpensive Mac that could handle far more than its price might suggest. The combination of a newer processor and additional RAM could make the second-generation model capable enough for an even wider group of buyers.

It still won't be aimed at professionals doing intensive workloads such as serious video editing, demanding software development or running large AI models locally. But for students and everyday users, the additional memory could remove one of the biggest reasons to consider stepping up to a MacBook Air.

New colours could also be coming

The performance upgrades may not be the only changes. Gurman reportedly says Apple is also considering new colour options for the MacBook Neo 2. The current model is available in Silver, Blush, Citrus and Indigo finishes. There is no confirmed launch date yet, but the first half of 2027 appears possible. Apple launched the first MacBook Neo in March 2026, so a similar timeframe for its successor would make sense.

The bigger question may be its price. The MacBook Neo originally launched in the US at $599, but Apple later increased its starting price to $699. In India, it debuted at Rs 69,900 before the price was raised to Rs 79,900 amid higher component costs. Even after the increase, the Neo remains Apple's cheapest MacBook and sits well below the MacBook Air, whose starting price has also risen by at least Rs 30,000. If Apple manages to keep the Neo 2 close to its current positioning while adding 12GB of RAM and a newer chip, it could become an even stronger entry point into the Mac lineup.
