Apple is likely to enter the foldable smartphone market with its iPhone Fold this year. While the company has not confirmed its launch, various reports suggest its existence. Some reports say the company is struggling with production, but Bloomberg’s Gurman recently said it will arrive alongside the iPhone 18 Pro this September. Amid this speculation, a tipster recently shared a photo of dummy units of the iPhone Fold placed between two iPhone 18 Pro Max models, showcasing its final size.
In the photo shared by tipster Sonney Dickson, the iPhone Fold can be seen in a passport-like form factor. It appears wider and shorter than other iPhones when closed and resembles an iPad mini when unfolded. It is expected to measure about 7.8 inches diagonally.
In the leaked photos, the Apple iPhone Fold design looks unconventional and appears to prioritise the unfolded experience. The screen is wider, which suggests Apple may be prioritising an expansive landscape experience.
While the unfolded screen may be ideal for watching 16:9 media such as movies and television shows, where many Android foldable smartphones struggle, it may become difficult for some users to carry.
Dummy models may not reflect final design
Meanwhile, readers should take this report with caution, as dummy models are not perfect recreations of real devices. Companies use them to guide third-party production and accessories. In addition, while the dummy image shows a noticeable hinge, reports suggest Apple has developed a near-invisible crease.
The dummy image also lacks design features such as camera holes, the MagSafe charging ring, and the Touch ID sensor, which will replace Face ID as the company has not been able to fit its components due to the slim design.
iPhone Fold: Expected processor, RAM, and storage
Reports suggest that the foldable iPhone will likely use Apple’s next-generation processor, expected to be called the A20 Pro. The chipset is expected to be built on a 2nm process, bringing notable performance and efficiency gains compared to the A19 Pro in the iPhone 17 Pro series. The foldable iPhone will likely come with 12GB of RAM and up to 1TB of storage.
On the battery front, reports indicate that the foldable iPhone may get a battery capacity between 5,400mAh and 5,800mAh, the largest in an iPhone to date. It will likely only support eSIM, with no physical SIM tray, similar to the iPhone Air.
Apple could pack a total of four cameras on the iPhone Fold. On the back, you can expect a dual rear camera setup with a 48-megapixel main camera and a 48-megapixel ultrawide camera. It is unclear whether the selfie cameras on the iPhone Fold will use the new 18-megapixel Centre Stage sensor that debuted with the iPhone 17 series.
