  • First model to be built by Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL)
  • MSL chief Alexandr Wang says Muse Spark was developed in nine months

In 2025, Mark Zuckerberg spent billions to set up the Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL). Meta brought Alexandr Wang to lead MSL after paying over $14 billion to acquire Scale AI. Now, MSL has released its first AI model, called Muse Spark. The company claims that it is the most advanced AI model Meta has ever made.

According to Alexandr Wang, Muse Spark was built entirely from scratch in just nine months. The new model will now power Meta AI across various platforms such as Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook.

It is likely that Muse Spark was the model that was being tested by MSL under the codename Avocado.

What is Meta Muse Spark?

Muse Spark is part of Meta’s new Muse family of AI models that will replace its older Llama models. Spark is not Meta’s top-tier model but rather it is a small model. The company said in a blog post, “This initial model is small and fast by design, yet capable enough to reason through complex questions in science, math, and health.”

Meta states that Muse Spark can match models such as Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.6 and OpenAI’s GPT 5.4 in certain benchmarks, which include multimodal reasoning, health applications, and agentic AI.

Alexandr Wang stated that Muse Spark’s contemplating mode can manage multiple agents that work parallely to handle complex tasks. He added, “In our testing we found it competitive w/ other extreme reasoning models such as Gemini Deep Think & GPT Pro.”

Wang compared benchmark results of Muse Spark with rival models.

What can Muse Spark do?

Wang explained that Muse Spark can understand the world around you. The AI can seemingly solve complex problems related to science or math, and even give you information from your conversations across Meta’s apps. He claimed that the AI was “built for the 3 billion people already using [Meta] apps every day.”

Muse Spark powers an updated version of Meta AI, available on the Meta AI app and website, with plans to expand to Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and Meta's smart glasses. There is also a new shopping mode that provides recommendations based on creators and brands.

Muse Spark is not open source

With the Llama models, Meta had a strategy of keeping them open-sourced. That is, the code of the models was available to the public. However, Muse Spark is closed source. Though the company says that there is “hope to open-source future versions of the model.”

Currently, Muse Spark is available as a private API preview to select partners. Alexandr added that this was just step one. He explained, “bigger models are already in development with infrastructure scaling to match.”

Alexandr Wang claimed that Muse Spark showcased strong refusal behaviour in high-risk areas like biological and chemical weapons during extensive safety evaluations, when compared to other advanced models from the likes of Anthropic and OpenAI.
