What is OSM? CBSE explains digital evaluation process after Class 12 score concerns

What is CBSE's on-screen marking system? Digital evaluation process explained

After concerns over Class 12 marks, CBSE said its On-Screen Marking (OSM) system digitally evaluates scanned answer sheets with quality checks and trained examiners. The board said the system reduces errors, improves transparency and keeps re-evaluation rights unchanged.

In Short

  • CBSE reintroduced On-Screen Marking (OSM) for Class 12 evaluation in 2026
  • OSM involves digital assessment of scanned answer sheets to reduce errors
  • Students raised concerns over accuracy of scanned scripts and diagrams

As confusion and frustration over Class 12 board marks spread among students and parents, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has stepped forward to explain its newly reintroduced On-Screen Marking (OSM) system, a digital evaluation process that has come under sharp scrutiny after the 2026 results.

Several students took to social media questioning whether scanned answer sheets, diagrams, and handwritten responses were being assessed accurately under the new system, triggering a wider debate over fairness and transparency in board evaluations.

Responding to the concerns, CBSE said the OSM process is designed to reduce human errors, improve consistency in marking, speed up result processing, and maintain strict confidentiality through multiple layers of quality checks and senior-level review.

The board emphasised that OSM has already been used successfully by several universities and examination bodies in India and abroad, and the latest version has been upgraded significantly compared to its earlier implementation in 2014.

WHAT IS THE OSM SYSTEM INTRODUCED BY CBSE?

OSM, or On-Screen Marking, is a digital evaluation system where scanned copies of students’ answer sheets are checked by examiners on computers instead of physical answer books.

Under this system, answersheets are scanned securely and uploaded to a digital platform. Evaluators then assess the responses online using the prescribed marking scheme. CBSE says the process improves consistency in marking and reduces calculation-related mistakes.

According to the board, key advantages of OSM include:

  • Elimination of totalling and tabulation errors
  • Better accuracy and consistency in evaluation
  • Faster declaration of results
  • Improved transparency and monitoring
  • Enhanced security during evaluation
  • Reduced administrative workload
  • More sustainable and cost-effective operations

CBSE also noted that institutions such as Anna University, Rajiv Gandhi Medical University, and several state education boards have experimented with or adopted similar digital evaluation systems.

WHY ARE STUDENTS RAISING CONCERNS OVER DIGITAL EVALUATION?

The concerns emerged after students noticed unexpected variations in marks and began questioning whether the digital system could properly assess handwritten answers, diagrams, and lengthy responses.

Some students also expressed fears that poor-quality scanning or technical glitches could impact evaluation accuracy.

However, CBSE has clarified that multiple quality-control measures are built into the process to prevent such issues. The board stated that if scanned answer sheets are unclear or unreadable, evaluators can reject them and request rescanning before assessment begins.

CBSE further stressed that evaluators undergo proper training before participating in the digital evaluation process. The board also said answer books are checked by Assistant Head Examiners (AHEs) and Head Examiners (HEs) after evaluation to maintain quality standards.

HOW DOES CBSE’S ON-SCREEN MARKING PROCESS WORK?

CBSE explained that the OSM process follows several carefully monitored steps to ensure confidentiality, fairness, and accuracy.

STEP 1: SECRECY AND ANONYMITY

After answer books are received from examination centres, a secrecy process is carried out by external experts to hide student identities and maintain anonymity.

STEP 2: SCANNING OF ANSWER BOOKS

The answer sheets are scanned using specialised infrastructure. CBSE said the updated system allows answer books to remain intact during scanning, reducing the possibility of mismatches.

STEP 3: QUALITY CHECK OF SCANNED COPIES

A dedicated team checks the quality of scanned answer sheets. If the scan quality is poor, the answer book is rescanned before evaluation.

STEP 4: SECURE DISTRIBUTION

Scanned answer books are sent digitally to different regions while ensuring confidentiality. Generally, answer sheets are not evaluated in the same region where the exam set was conducted.

STEP 5: SECURITY MEASURES

CBSE uses whitelisted static IP addresses at evaluation centres to ensure secure access to the system and prevent unauthorised activity.

STEP 6: DIGITAL EVALUATION BY EXAMINERS

Head Examiners assign answer sheets to evaluators online. Teachers then assess responses digitally according to the official marking scheme.

STEP 7: RECHECKING AND MONITORING

If evaluators encounter unclear scans, they can flag and reject them for corrective action. Evaluated answer books are later cross-checked by senior examiners for consistency.

WHY DID CBSE REINTRODUCE OSM IN 2026?

CBSE first experimented with OSM in 2014 but faced technical challenges, especially in scanning infrastructure and device availability.

The board said the 2026 rollout became possible after introducing several upgrades, including:

  • Better scanning technology
  • Stronger quality-control systems
  • Improved digital infrastructure in schools
  • Training programmes for teachers and evaluators

CBSE added that schools affiliated with the board are now required to maintain minimum digital infrastructure standards, helping ensure smooth implementation.

CAN STUDENTS APPLY FOR RE-EVALUATION UNDER OSM?

Yes. CBSE has not removed the re-evaluation or verification process under the OSM system. Students can still apply for verification of marks, photocopies of answer sheets, and re-evaluation as per existing board rules.

DOES OSM REDUCE HUMAN ERRORS IN MARKING?

CBSE says one of the biggest advantages of OSM is the reduction of human errors such as incorrect totalling, missed answers, and tabulation mistakes.

Since the system follows a structured digital workflow and evaluators must adhere closely to marking guidelines, the board believes OSM improves uniformity and fairness in assessment.

CBSE’s reintroduction of the On-Screen Marking system marks a major shift towards digital evaluation in board examinations. While students’ concerns over marks and scanning accuracy have triggered debate, the board maintains that OSM is designed to make the evaluation process faster, more transparent, and less prone to manual errors.

As digital assessment becomes more common across educational institutions, the effectiveness of CBSE’s upgraded OSM system will likely continue to be closely watched by students, parents, and educators alike.
