A dog’s ride atop a small truck full of vegetables in Bengaluru has gone viral on X, but the unlikely sight has also raised questions about the state of the items taken to the market to be consumed by people. For some users, the video became less “aww” and more “hygiene has left the chat”.

X user Akansha, who is based in Bengaluru, shared the video with the caption, “Monday started with the cutest thing. Meet mahakutteshwar of Bengaluru!” It showed a dog comfortably perched on top of vegetables being transported in a small truck, seemingly enjoying the ride as the vehicle made its way through the city.

The post has clocked more than 406k views, and social media users quickly split into two camps. One side saw nothing but an adorable dog having what looked like the most comfortable commute of the day.

The other side, however, was looking at the vegetables and wondering who would eventually be taking them home.

Many concerned users pointed out that having a stray dog sit directly on produce meant for consumption was a hygiene concern. Their argument was simple: the person buying those vegetables would have no way of knowing what the produce had been exposed to before reaching the market.

Some users were quick to clarify that being a dog lover and being concerned about food hygiene are hardly mutually exclusive. They said dogs can carry bacteria, parasites and other pathogens, and felt that stray animals should be kept away from food items meant for human consumption.

Then came another question: did the dog really have to sit there?

A few users pointed out that the person transporting the vegetables could have simply kept the animal elsewhere in the vehicle. That, they felt, would have allowed everyone to enjoy the cute moment without turning a pile of vegetables into a dog bed.
