CBSE cracks down on schools, sets May 31 deadline to finalise Class 6 third language
CBSE has asked affiliated schools to finalise and upload the Class 6 third language (R3) on the OASIS portal by May 31, 2026, and fix any non-compliant entries under NCF-SE 2023. The directive links textbook rules, the July 1 two-language mandate, and stricter monitoring to ensure smooth rollout.

- CBSE mandates all schools to finalise Class 6 third language by May 31, 2026
- Directive follows concerns over delays and non-compliant language submissions
- Official textbooks for constitutional languages to be available by July 1, 2026
In a renewed push to align schools with the Central Board of Secondary Education’s multilingual education goals, CBSE has issued a fresh directive mandating all affiliated schools to finalise and upload their Class 6 third language (R3) by May 31, 2026.
The move comes amid concerns that several institutions have either delayed compliance or submitted language choices that do not conform to prescribed norms.
The latest notice builds on CBSE’s earlier circular dated April 9, 2026, which outlined the rollout of the third language requirement under the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023. While many schools have already uploaded their selected R3 language on the OASIS portal, CBSE noted inconsistencies and incomplete submissions in several cases.
According to the Board, this follow-up directive is aimed at ensuring uniform implementation across all affiliated schools before the start of the 2026–27 academic session.
MAY 31 DEADLINE: FINAL OPPORTUNITY FOR SCHOOLS
CBSE has clearly stated that May 31, 2026, is the final deadline for schools to upload their selected third language (R3) and to correct any previously submitted entries that do not meet policy guidelines.
The Board has emphasised that this process is mandatory, and failure to comply may attract scrutiny from regional offices.

TEXTBOOK GUIDELINES AND LANGUAGE OPTIONS
As per the circular issued by the board, detailed guidelines have been laid out for teaching materials under the third language policy. For languages included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India, official textbooks will be made available on CBSE and NCERT platforms before July 1, 2026.
In cases where schools opt for languages not listed in the constitutional schedule, they may use textbooks prescribed by SCERT or other state-approved learning resources.
However, irrespective of the source of the material, all teaching content must strictly align with the learning outcomes defined in the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023.
THREE-LANGUAGE FORMULA: STRICT IMPLEMENTATION
Reinforcing the three-language formula (R1, R2, R3), CBSE has reiterated that:
- At least two of the three languages must be Indian languages
- Schools that have not yet implemented two Indian languages must do so from July 1, 2026, without delay.
This directive aligns with the broader goals of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasises multilingualism and cultural inclusivity.
MONITORING AND SUPPORT BY CBSE
Also, CBSE has directed its regional offices to closely monitor compliance with the third language implementation and provide necessary guidance and support to schools facing challenges.
The board has also urged schools to treat this mandate as a priority, highlighting its long-term importance for students’ linguistic growth and cognitive development.
A STEP TOWARDS MULTILINGUAL INDIA
The introduction of a structured third language in Class 6 marks a significant step in reshaping school education in India. By enforcing stricter timelines and clearer guidelines, CBSE aims to ensure that schools move beyond procedural delays and fully embrace multilingual learning.
As the May 31 deadline approaches, the onus now lies on schools to act swiftly, not just to comply with regulations, but to contribute meaningfully to a more linguistically diverse and inclusive education system.
