- The platform is also rolling out more long-requested user-friendly features
If you've ever wondered why Instagram keeps showing you content you don't care about, the platform may finally have an answer. Instagram is working on new ways to let users personalise their feed, giving them more control over the content recommended by its algorithm. Instagram head Adam Mosseri recently shared a preview of several upcoming features designed to make the platform's "Your Algorithm" tool more accessible. The feature, first introduced in 2025, allows users to influence the kind of content Instagram recommends. Now, the company wants to make those controls easier to use while you're browsing.
"We're working on making Your Algorithm feel more present and useful across Instagram. I wanted to share a few ideas we're exploring," Mosseri wrote in an Instagram post.
What is changing?
The biggest idea behind the update is simple: instead of digging through settings, users will be able to adjust their recommendations directly from their feed. One example shared by Mosseri shows that pulling down on the Instagram home feed could open a "Your Algorithm" menu. Another concept lets users swipe up from a Reel to quickly customise what they want to see next. Instagram is also testing buttons beneath Reels that allow users to tell the app whether they want to see more or fewer videos like that.
"The idea is easy access right from the home screen. Ideally, you can tune it in real time," Mosseri explained.
However, not every feature shown in the preview is guaranteed to launch.
"Some of this is testing now, some is coming soon, some might not work. Let me know what you think," he added.
Users have been asking for more control
The announcement comes at a time when many Instagram users have been vocal about wanting better control over their feeds.
One of the most-liked comments on Mosseri's post summed up a common complaint: "WE JUST WANT OUR ALGORITHM TO SHOW THE PPL WE FOLLOW."
For years, many users have said their home feed is filled with recommended posts and Reels instead of updates from friends and creators they actually follow. The new tools appear to be Instagram's latest attempt to address those concerns by making it easier for users to shape their recommendations.
Instagram has been listening to user feedback
The algorithm update is part of a broader effort by Instagram to introduce features users have long requested. Recently, the platform rolled out the ability to add separate captions to individual photos in a carousel post. Previously, every image in a carousel had to share a single caption, making it difficult to provide context for each photo or tell a story slide by slide.
With the new feature, users can now give each image its own caption using a simple toggle while creating a post. The option is entirely optional, but it offers creators and everyday users a more flexible way to share stories and information.
