In Short

  • Google Search is becoming conversational with Gemini-powered AI Mode
  • New AI agents on Google Search can search, monitor and even book services for users
  • Google Search can now create mini apps, trackers and personalised dashboards

For more than two decades, searching on Google mostly meant the same thing: type a few words, hit enter and scroll through a page full of blue links. But at Google I/O 2026, Google announced what may be the biggest transformation to Search in its 25-year history — one where users may no longer need to search the internet the old way at all.

The company unveiled a series of new AI-powered upgrades that turn Google Search into something far more conversational, intelligent and proactive. Instead of simply showing websites, Search can now answer questions like a chatbot, build custom tools, monitor the web for updates and even complete tasks on behalf of users through AI agents.

In short, Google no longer wants Search to feel like a search engine. It wants it to feel like a personal AI assistant.

The era of typing keywords is slowly ending

Last year, Google introduced AI Mode inside Search, allowing users to ask questions in natural language instead of typing short keyword phrases. According to Google, AI Mode has already crossed one billion monthly users, with usage more than doubling every quarter since launch.

Now, Google is expanding AI Mode in a major way.

The company has upgraded Search with Gemini 3.5 Flash as the default AI model globally inside AI Mode. The new version of Search can now help users formulate questions using AI-powered suggestions that go far beyond traditional autocomplete.

Instead of just typing words into a box, users can now search using text, images, files, videos and even Chrome tabs as inputs. Google says its new intelligent Search box is rolling out starting today in all countries and languages where AI Mode is available.

Search is also becoming much more conversational. Users can continue asking follow-up questions directly from AI Overviews without restarting searches. Google says the system remembers context, allowing conversations to naturally continue while also surfacing more relevant links and articles over time.

Google now wants AI agents to search for you

One of the biggest announcements at the event was Search agents.

Google says users will now be able to create, customise and manage multiple AI agents directly inside Search. These agents can continuously work in the background, scanning the web and monitoring information 24/7.

The company is starting with information agents, which can intelligently search across blogs, news websites, social media posts and real-time data sources like finance, shopping and sports.

The idea is simple: instead of repeatedly searching for updates yourself, Google’s AI agent will keep searching for you.

For example, if someone is apartment hunting, they can simply describe all their requirements once. The AI agent will then continuously monitor listings online and notify the user whenever a suitable option appears.

Google Search can now book services and call businesses for you

Google is also expanding what it calls “agentic booking” inside Search.

The company says Search will now help users book local experiences and services by combining pricing, availability and direct booking links in one place.

For some categories, including home repair, beauty and pet care, users can even ask Google to call businesses on their behalf.

In many ways, Google Search is slowly shifting from helping users “find” information to actually helping them “do” things.

Search can now create mini apps and dashboards

One of the more futuristic announcements at I/O 2026 was Google Search’s ability to create mini apps and custom dashboards.

According to Google, Search can now build trackers and interactive tools for ongoing tasks that people repeatedly search for, such as planning a wedding, managing a house move or tracking fitness goals.

For example, users can ask Search to create a custom fitness tracker. Google says Search will automatically code the tracker using real-time information such as maps, reviews, local weather and other live data sources.

These experiences are powered by Google Antigravity and the agentic coding capabilities of Gemini 3.5 Flash.

Google also says Search will be capable of generating dynamic layouts in real-time, including tables, graphs, simulations and interactive visuals for complex topics. So instead of reading long articles about astrophysics or mechanical systems, users could interact with visual explanations generated instantly by AI.

Search is becoming personal too

Google also announced Personal Intelligence for Search.

This feature allows Search to securely connect information across Google apps such as Gmail and Google Photos to provide more personalised responses tailored specifically to individual users.

In simple terms, Google Search is becoming less like a universal search engine and more like a personalised AI system that understands your habits, tasks and preferences.
