Royal Enfield is set to expand its adventure motorcycle line-up with the launch of the new Himalayan 440 on September 4, 2026. The upcoming motorcycle is expected to slot below the Himalayan 450 and serve as a more accessible, mechanically simpler adventure tourer for riders seeking a rugged long-distance motorcycle.

The launch is expected to take place around Royal Enfield’s annual Himalayan Base Camp event in Ladakh, giving the new motorcycle a fitting setting given the nameplate’s association with mountain touring. The timing is also significant as 2026 marks a decade since the original Himalayan went on sale in India.

Spiritual successor to the Himalayan 411

The Himalayan 440 is expected to bring back the simple and approachable character of the discontinued Himalayan 411, while using a more modern powertrain. Unlike the Himalayan 450, which features a liquid-cooled engine, ride-by-wire throttle, TFT instrumentation and electronic rider aids, the new model is expected to focus on mechanical simplicity and affordability.

The motorcycle is likely to share its underpinnings with the Scram 440 but will receive several changes aimed at improving its adventure-touring ability. These could include revised ergonomics, better wind protection, longer-travel suspension and a more touring-focused riding position.

443cc engine with 6-speed gearbox

Power is expected to come from Royal Enfield’s 443cc, air/oil-cooled, single-cylinder LS440 engine, which currently powers the Scram 440. In its existing state of tune, the engine produces 25.4bhp and 34Nm of torque and is paired with a six-speed gearbox.

The Himalayan 440 is expected to receive tuning and calibration changes to suit its adventure-touring character, although major changes to the engine are unlikely.

Expected price and positioning

The Himalayan 440 is expected to be positioned between the Scram 440 and Himalayan 450 in Royal Enfield’s line-up. It could be priced at around Rs 2.20 lakh to Rs 2.50 lakh (ex-showroom), making it a potentially attractive option for riders who want an adventure motorcycle without moving into the more premium Himalayan 450.

The new model could therefore give Royal Enfield a stronger presence in the entry-level adventure touring segment, while offering an alternative to buyers who prioritise simplicity, ease of maintenance and touring ability over outright performance and electronic features.

Why the Himalayan 440 matters

The original Himalayan, launched in 2016, played a key role in making purpose-built adventure motorcycles more accessible to Indian riders. Its simple engine, long-travel suspension and rugged character made it popular among touring enthusiasts.

The Himalayan 450 subsequently moved the nameplate upmarket with a more powerful Sherpa engine and modern electronics. The Himalayan 440 is expected to bridge the gap between the two generations by combining a relatively simple mechanical package with the refinement of Royal Enfield’s newer 440cc platform.

If launched as expected, the Himalayan 440 could revive the affordable, no-nonsense adventure touring formula that made the original Himalayan popular, while giving buyers a simpler alternative to the more sophisticated Himalayan 450.
