Nasa astronaut Sunita Williams is spreading Christmas cheer from the International Space Station (ISS), where she and her crew are preparing to celebrate the holiday season in space.

Following a recent resupply mission by a SpaceX Dragon capsule, which delivered essential supplies and festive gifts, Williams expressed her joy at being able to connect with family and friends despite the distance from Earth.

"As we get ready for Christmas holidays. Its a great time we get to spend it with all of our family up on the Space Station. There are seven of us here and we are going to enjoy it together," the Space Station Commander said.

"One of the things I like about Christmas is the preparation, just getting ready, anticipation and everybody getting together for the holidays," Williams added.

The astronauts plan to enjoy special meals prepared with fresh ingredients sent from Earth, allowing them to partake in familiar holiday customs.

These meals, made possible by the recent cargo delivery, will bring a taste of home to their unique environment.

Additionally, the crew is set to connect with their loved ones through video calls, ensuring that they can share their Christmas experience and maintain emotional well-being during this extended mission.

Williams's time aboard the ISS has been prolonged due to technical delays with her spacecraft, initially intended for an eight-day mission. She is now expected to return in March 2025.

Throughout her stay, Williams has also engaged in educational outreach, inspiring students on Earth by sharing insights about life in microgravity and fostering interest in space exploration.

As she celebrates Christmas in space, Sunita Williams embodies the resilience and spirit of astronauts who find ways to maintain connections with their families and traditions, regardless of their extraordinary circumstances.
