Census 2027: Here's how to complete self-enumeration online

In his Independence Day address on August 15, PM Modi appealed to the country's youth to spend an hour or two helping their families provide Census 2027 information. He said accurate data collected through the Census will help shape policies and the country's development plans. The appeal comes as India conducts its first Census in which data collection is being carried out digitally, with citizens also getting the option of self-enumeration.

WHAT DID PM MODI SAY?

Addressing the nation from the Red Fort, PM Modi said he was asking young people to take the lead in the exercise.

He urged families to sit together and register their Census details digitally, while checking spellings and other information carefully. The Prime Minister said even an hour or two spent on the exercise could help the country by making its data more accurate.

His message was not just about completing a form. The Prime Minister said Census data is used to understand the country and helps in preparing policies and plans for the future.

CENSUS 2027 GOES DIGITAL

For the first time in the history of India's Census, data is being collected through digital tools. Enumerators use a dedicated mobile app, while citizens have an additional option to submit their household information themselves through the Self-Enumeration facility.

The government says the digital system is designed to make data collection more convenient and allow information to be processed without the earlier dependence on paper-based forms.

However, the traditional door-to-door process has not disappeared. Enumerators will still visit households to collect and verify information, ensuring that people are not left out of the Census.

HOW DOES CENSUS SELF-ENUMERATION WORK?

Self-enumeration allows residents to submit their household information digitally instead of waiting for an enumerator to collect the details.

The facility is part of the first phase of Census 2027, which covers Houselisting and Housing Census. This phase collects information about housing conditions, household particulars, amenities and assets.

The second phase, Population Enumeration, will collect individual-level information, including details such as age, marital status, education, economic activity, migration and other demographic information.

WHY DOES ACCURATE CENSUS DATA MATTER?

A Census is more than simply counting India's population. The information collected helps provide a statistical base for government planning, resource allocation, infrastructure and development programmes.

That is why PM Modi's appeal focuses on getting the details right. Incorrect spellings, missing information or errors in household data can affect the quality of the final dataset.

IS CENSUS DATA SAFE?

The government says information collected under the Census Act, 1948 is confidential and is used only for statistical analysis and development planning. Digital Census systems also include security measures for data collection, transmission and storage.

For citizens, the message is simple: when the Census process reaches your household, provide the information carefully. And if you are more comfortable with digital forms, PM Modi wants young people to help their families complete the process accurately.
