In Short

  • Shubham Goyal excelled at DTU and topped IIM Ahmedabad with a Gold Medal
  • He worked at BCG on strategy and led major projects with large budgets
  • Joined Microsoft in 2021, managing product teams for Microsoft Whiteboard and AI apps

Some careers are built around a single breakthrough. Others are shaped by a series of achievements across different fields. Shubham Goyal's journey belongs to the second category. From graduating among the top students at Delhi Technological University (DTU) and securing Rank 1 at IIM Ahmedabad to receiving the institute's Gold Medal for scholastic performance, Goyal has built his career through sustained academic excellence, adaptability and a willingness to move across disciplines.

After graduating from IIM Ahmedabad, Shubham joined Boston Consulting Group (BCG) as a Senior Associate before moving into product management at Microsoft. Today, based in Calgary, Canada, he is a Principal Product Manager at Microsoft, where he leads a 13-member team focused on the enterprise deployment of Microsoft Security solutions.

His work now spans artificial intelligence, enterprise technology, product management and cybersecurity, marking a significant shift from his early career in computer engineering.

FROM COMPUTER ENGINEERING TO IIM AHMEDABAD

Goyal completed his Bachelor of Technology in Computer Engineering from Delhi Technological University, graduating with a GPA of 9.564 out of 10. He secured Class Rank 2 among 146 students and University Rank 4 among 1,582 students, placing him among the top performers at the university.

His performance in competitive examinations was equally strong. In the GATE-CSE examination held in March 2017, he secured an All India Rank of 365, which he lists as being in the top 0.38 percentile.

He also scored 760 in the GMAT, placing him in the 99th percentile. These academic achievements eventually took him to IIM Ahmedabad, where his performance reached another level.

IIM AHMEDABAD GOLD MEDAL FOR SCHOLASTIC PERFORMANCE

Goyal joined the MBA programme at IIM Ahmedabad in 2017 and graduated in 2019.

At IIM Ahmedabad, he secured Institute Rank 1 in both the first and second years of the MBA programme. He went on to achieve Overall Institute Rank 1 in his batch of 393 students, based on the combined GPA for both years.

His performance earned him the IIM Ahmedabad Gold Medal for scholastic performance, awarded in March 2019.

According to the institute's award description on Goyal's profile, the Gold Medal is given to MBA students who secure overall institute Rank 1, 2 or 3 after their academic performance across both years is combined.

The achievement is particularly notable because it reflects consistent performance throughout the two-year programme rather than success in a single examination or semester.

His combination of computer engineering and management education would later provide the foundation for a career spanning strategy consulting, technology and product management.

FROM BCG TO MICROSOFT

After graduating from IIM Ahmedabad, Goyal joined Boston Consulting Group (BCG) as a Senior Associate in August 2019. At BCG, he worked on a range of strategy and business transformation assignments involving large organisations.

He led the Project Management Office for one of BCG's office buildout projects, supervising a team of five people for a project with an approved budget of $14 million.

He was also selected as an advisor for a BCG CEO Advisory APAC case, where he interviewed prominent CEOs across the Asia-Pacific region.

His other assignments included identifying $41.7 million worth of carve-out opportunities in the oil and gas sector for a multinational client, developing a marketing strategy for the Indian subsidiary of a global social media company, and leading go-to-market acceleration strategies for two multibillion-dollar accounts.

His analytical abilities also stood out during his time at BCG. He secured a perfect score and ranked 1 among 107 participants in an Alteryx and Tableau advanced analytics competition.

But consulting was not his final destination.

THE MOVE INTO PRODUCT MANAGEMENT

Goyal joined Microsoft in January 2021 as a Program Manager 2 in Product Management in Noida. His early work involved leading a team of nine full-time employees for the launch and growth of Microsoft Whiteboard apps on Android and iOS.

He subsequently became Senior Program Manager, Product Management, where he co-led teams working on cross-app partnerships involving Microsoft Loop, Visio and Planner, along with user education and usability initiatives for Microsoft Whiteboard.

In August 2023, he moved into the role of Senior Product Manager and relocated to Calgary, Canada.

As Senior Product Manager, he co-led a 19-member team working on an AI-first transformation through the Microsoft 365 Copilot app, which has a user base running into the millions.

The role marked another important transition in his career, taking him deeper into Microsoft's growing artificial intelligence ecosystem.

NOW LEADING A 13-MEMBER TEAM AT MICROSOFT CANADA

In December 2025, Goyal took on his current role as Principal Product Manager at Microsoft. Based in Calgary, Alberta, he now leads a 13-member team focused on the enterprise deployment of Microsoft Security solutions.

The role comes at a time when organisations are rapidly adopting artificial intelligence while also confronting new security challenges associated with technology. Goyal's team works on solutions designed to help organisations protect themselves from AI-led and AI-assisted security incidents.

His progression at Microsoft --- from Program Manager to Senior Program Manager, Senior Product Manager and Principal Product Manager, reflects a steady expansion of his product and leadership responsibilities.

Before taking on his current role, he had also co-led the 19-member team working on Microsoft's AI-first transformation through the Microsoft 365 Copilot app.

A TECHNOLOGY ENTHUSIAST BEYOND HIS JOB

Goyal's interest in technology extends beyond his professional responsibilities. He describes himself as an avid coding enthusiast and video gamer and has participated in and won national and international coding and video-gaming competitions.

In November 2023, he was named a winner of the Microsoft Global Hackathon Executive Challenge. His interests outside his formal job also reflect the technology-focused foundation that has been a recurring theme throughout his academic and professional journey.

FROM ENGINEERING TO AI AND CYBERSECURITY

What makes Goyal's journey notable is its evolution across disciplines. He began with computer engineering at DTU, went on to earn the IIM Ahmedabad Gold Medal for scholastic performance, joined BCG and later moved into product management at Microsoft.

Today, his work sits at the intersection of artificial intelligence, enterprise technology and cybersecurity. His career shows that while academic excellence can open doors, continued learning, adaptability and the willingness to take on new challenges can shape what comes next.

From DTU and IIM Ahmedabad to BCG and Microsoft Canada, Goyal's journey is ultimately a story of sustained performance, and what can follow when academic success is combined with the ability to evolve.
