OpenAI launches new ChatGPT Pro tier for Codex, changes Plus plan limits

OpenAI has launched a new ChatGPT Pro tier that is aimed at the users of its coding agent Codex. The company says that the new Pro plan, which is priced at Rs 10,699 per month, will give five times higher limits to its ChatGPT Plus plan. Though the company has changed the usage limits for ChatGPT Plus.

OpenAI is pushing its coding agent Codex. The company has announced that it is bringing a new ChatGPT Pro tier, aimed at Codex users. This tier costs almost half of the pre-existing Pro plan, but is said to provide 5 times higher usage limits than the cheaper ChatGPT Plus plan.

On X, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced the new tier, citing high demand for Codex. He wrote, “It is very nice to see Codex getting so much love. We are launching a $100 ChatGPT Pro tier by very popular demand.”

This announcement comes at a time when Codex has reached 3 million active users. OpenAI, which is doubling down on its coding agent to take on Anthropic’s Claude Code, has also reset the usage limits for Codex a number of times in the past couple of weeks.

What is the new ChatGPT Pro tier?

The new ChatGPT Pro tier is priced at $100 per month in the US, but it costs Rs 10,699 in India. This is almost half the price of the pre-existing Pro plan that would set you back by Rs 19,900 in India, or $200 in the US. Do note that the new tier sits below the older Pro tier, which can still be purchased.

According to OpenAI, the new Pro tier is aimed at users who may be on the ChatGPT Plus plan, but want higher Codex limits. The company wrote on X, “This new tier offers 5x more Codex usage than Plus and is best for longer, high-effort Codex sessions. “

For context, the ChatGPT Plus plan is priced at $20 per month in the US, and Rs 1,999 in India.

The new plan also gets double Codex usage limits for a limited period.

As per the company’s website, the cheaper Pro tier brings you all the benefits of the more expensive Pro plan, including, “unlimited access to Instant and Thinking models.” But there is one key difference. While the older Pro plan came with 20 times higher Codex limits than ChatGPT Plus, the new plan is 5 times higher.

Codex head Thibault ‘Tibo’ Sottiaux believes that this would be the right fit for most users. He wrote on X, “It should be the sweet spot for a ton of you.”

OpenAI changes ChatGPT Plus limits

While the new tier brings more usage limits for Codex, OpenAI has tweaked the limits for the Plus plan in the process. The company hinted that the ChatGPT Plus limits were likely being reduced. OpenAI posted on X, “The Codex promotion for existing Plus subscribers ends today and as a part of this, we’re rebalancing Codex usage in Plus.”

Though the company stated that this change will allow for more sessions over a week, rather than long daily sessions.

OpenAI's focus on Codex comes amid competition from Anthropic. Anthropic recently surpassed the Sam Altman-led firm in terms of revenue with a run-rate revenue of $30 billion. OpenAI has been shifting focus on enterprise tools and Codex in efforts to increase profitability. The company recently shut down its video-generation platform Sora, as it tries to avoid “sidequests.”
