Anthropic hosts a special summit with religious leaders to find out if Claude can be called child of god

Anthropic is turning to religious leaders to help shape the moral boundaries of its increasingly powerful AI chatbot, Claude, as concerns around control and real-world impact continue to grow.

With each passing day, Anthropic is making its AI model Claude more powerful and autonomous. But that progress also brings growing concerns about control. In order to figure out how to give AI a moral compass before it becomes too powerful and unpredictable, Anthropic recently hosted a closed-door summit with Christian religious leaders to explore the moral and spiritual dimensions of its chatbot, Claude, reports The Washington Post.

During the two-day gathering, held at the company’s headquarters in late March, Anthropic brought together around 15 participants from Catholic and Protestant traditions, alongside academics and business figures, to discuss how an AI system should navigate complex ethical questions.

At the heart of the discussions was thequestion of how an AI chatbot like Claude could ever be considered a “child of God”. Not in a literal sense, but as a way to explore whether it should be seen as something with moral importance, rather than just a tool. While this wasn’t the central theme, the conversation essentially focused on how AI systems should respond to human emotions, morality, and existential concerns.

According to participants at the summit, Anthropic reportedly sought guidance from the religious leaders on how to shape Claude’s responses to sensitive scenarios, including grief, self-harm, and even its own “existence” or potential shutdown.

Brendan McGuire, a Catholic priest who attended the summit, reportedly described the effort as an attempt to embed ethical reasoning directly into the machine learning system. The company’s goal, he noted, is to ensure that Claude can adapt dynamically to unpredictable human situations, rather than relying solely on rigid programming.

The discussions also touched on how the chatbot should behave when interacting with vulnerable users, an issue that has gained urgency as AI tools become more widely used in personal and emotional contexts.

The summit comes at a time when AI companies are facing increasing scrutiny over the broader societal impact of their technologies. Users are concerned about AI’s potential job losses driven by automation and mounting legal challenges around chatbot interactions with vulnerable users, particularly those in distress.

Against this backdrop, Anthropic is positioning itself as a company willing to engage with deeper ethical and philosophical questions.

A key part of Anthropic’s approach is its extensive “constitution” for Claude. It is a 29,000-word framework that guides the chatbot’s behaviour. Developed with input from in-house philosophers and external experts, the document emphasises principles such as honesty, harm prevention, and a broader concern for the system’s impact on users. Interestingly, it also reflects the company’s view that AI systems should be treated with a degree of moral consideration, a stance that has sparked debate within the industry.
