Flight booked already? Check this before paying for seat selection
Many air travellers assume paying for a seat is compulsory after booking a flight ticket. In reality, airlines generally provide a free seat, but there are a few important details every passenger should know.

- Paying for seat selection is usually optional
- Airlines provide a seat even if you skip paid selection
- Preferred seats, window seats and extra legroom seats often cost extra
Booking a flight ticket is often just the beginning of the travel bill. After selecting a flight and making the payment, many passengers are surprised to see an additional charge for choosing a seat.
Window seats, aisle seats and extra legroom seats often come with a fee, leading many travellers to wonder whether paying for seat selection is compulsory.
The good news is that in most cases, it is not. If you do not want to pay extra, airlines will generally assign a seat to you automatically before departure or during check-in.
WHAT IS PAID SEAT SELECTION?
Paid seat selection allows passengers to choose exactly where they want to sit on the aircraft before travelling.
Airlines typically charge extra for seats that are considered more comfortable or convenient, such as window seats, aisle seats, front-row seats and seats with extra legroom.
The fee varies depending on the airline, route and seat location. In many cases, standard seats cost less while premium locations command higher charges.
CAN YOU SKIP THE CHARGE?
Yes. In most situations, passengers are not required to pay for seat selection. If you choose not to select a seat, the airline will assign one free of charge.
This means you will still be able to travel even if you do not spend extra money on choosing where to sit.
However, the assigned seat may not be a window or aisle seat, and passengers travelling together may not always get seats next to each other.
This is one reason why some travellers choose to pay for seat selection.
WHY DO AIRLINES CHARGE FOR SEATS?
Airlines increasingly rely on additional services to generate revenue beyond ticket sales. Seat selection has become one of the most common optional charges in the aviation industry.
Rather than increasing base ticket prices, airlines often keep fares competitive and charge separately for extras such as baggage, meals, priority boarding and preferred seating.
WHAT ABOUT THE RULES IN INDIA?
Earlier this year, aviation authorities proposed measures requiring airlines to make a larger share of seats available without extra charges.
The move aimed to improve passenger convenience and reduce complaints about seat selection fees.
However, implementation of these measures has been put on hold while the government reviews the policy.
If you are happy to sit anywhere on the aircraft, there is usually no need to pay extra for seat selection.
A seat will generally be assigned to you automatically. But if sitting with family, securing a window seat or getting extra legroom matters to you, paying for a preferred seat may be worth the additional cost.
