Last year, Instagram stepped into the video editing space with the launch of an app simply called "Edits," and since then, the reel landscape on the platform has shifted quite noticeably. The app lets users record, perform single-frame-precision editing, and export crisp 4K, watermark-free videos of up to 10 minutes, all without spending a penny. Now, the company is ready to take things further. At an event in Los Angeles on Wednesday, Instagram previewed a set of upcoming additions to the app, including a new AI assistant and a long-awaited desktop version, bringing Edits beyond its mobile-only origins for the first time.

At the event, the company also announced a set of new tools rolling out to the app right away, including a "Beta" tab dedicated to experimental features and expanded audience insights.

AI assistant and desktop support are on the way

One of the biggest additions coming to Edits is an AI-powered assistant designed to help creators understand what is and isn't working in their content. The assistant will be able to analyse performance data from Instagram, including views and audience retention, and explain why certain videos perform better than others. It can also suggest fresh content ideas, recommend trending audio, and offer guidance based on a creator's previous posts.

The move is clearly aimed at keeping creators within Instagram's ecosystem. Instead of relying on third-party tools for brainstorming or analysing content performance, creators will be able to access these insights directly inside Edits. Similar AI-powered creator tools are already available on platforms like YouTube and TikTok, making this an important addition for Meta as competition for creator attention continues to intensify.

Instagram also confirmed that a desktop version of Edits is in development. The upcoming release will allow creators to work on larger screens and gain more precise control over the editing process. Projects will sync between mobile devices and desktops, making it easier to switch between workflows. The desktop expansion should help Edits better compete with old rivals like CapCut, which has offered desktop Edits for some time.

New tools arrive today

Alongside the upcoming features, Instagram is rolling out several new tools to all Edits users starting today. The most notable is a new Beta tab, which gives creators early access to experimental features that are still under development. Users will be able to test these tools before their wider release and provide feedback directly to Instagram.

The app is also gaining deeper audience insights. Creators can now view more detailed information about their followers, including demographic breakdowns and the times of day when their audience is most active. These new metrics join existing analytics such as watch time, follower growth from individual videos, and points where viewers stop watching content.

Although Instagram did not reveal how many people currently use Edits, the company claims videos created with the app see a 10 percent higher save rate and a 2 percent higher reshare rate compared to videos made elsewhere. The company also says that more than half of people watching Reels on Instagram are seeing content created with Edits every day.
